Yes. If you abstain from eating foods, but take vitamin supplements, drink plenty of water, natural juices, and electrolytes. But do not do this for too long it will weaken your system.

You have recieved quite a few informative answers to your question. I tend to agree with the majority of people in saying that a "fast" in not intended to coincide with rigorous excercise. You would be taxing your body to it's limit in doing so. This could prove to be dangerous. You must first consult your physician before attempting to do this. There are too many variables that need to be taken into consideration before you can make a informative decision to either move forward with the fast or decline. Here is something that you have probably not considered. When you fast, your brain/body doesn't know that you intend to eat again at a set date, thus, it will think you are starving. When that happens, the body tends to hold onto the extra fat calories just to survive. Some people who fast, don't lose very much weight because of this phenomenon.

I am in the middle of losing weight, 30lbs. First, I went to my physician for my annual check-up (blood work, urine, EKG, etc.) to get a qualified opinion of what would be the best excercise program for a person of my age and weight. As of yesterday, a month after visiting my physician and getting the green light to excercise, I am down 9lbs. What am I doing to lose the weight? Walking. I walk every day if not every other day 2-2 1/2 miles. That's all. It's not a slow paced walk...I keep a steady fast pace which allows me to sweat. My diet has changed also...I read food labels more now. I check for cholesterol and sodium contents and of course calories. All of this is not time consuming nor is it crimping my lifestyle at all. If it did I'd probably would still be 9lbs. heavier and on my way to becoming 10, 15, 20 lbs or more overweight.

I put as a source the wikipedia definition of the word "fast".

Good luck to you. Remember it took effort on your part to become overweight...it will take that same amount of effort and then some to lose it. There are no quick fixes.

I clicke in and there were already 202 answers. Still, I've got to try.

By definition, fasting is not heatthy. Anything you do to to alleviate the risks involves feeding the body, and THAT is not fasting.

So, I have to consider that you are just curious and have no intention of really fasting, or you intend to join a so-called fast to support a cause. Some folks, locally are doing a "rotating" fast, where people take turns not eating. Heck, I've done that when I was too busy to grab a bite. That's NOT a fast. Not even close.

Cesar Chavez did periodic fasts, where he was closely monitored and fed, I beleive, a cup of milk each day. Mahatma Ghandi truely fasted, accepting only water. Since water offers no nutritional value, I consider this a genuine fast.

There are many forms of modified fasts that are less dangerous than others. What ever you are considering, if it is an extreme form you will attempt, do it under doctor supervision, take a couple of good multivitamins, and if your health begins to fail, FOR ANY REASON, you must stop.

First, fasting is overrated. Usually the weight you lose is water weight, which can be as much as 10lbs if you're heavy enough. But if you really want to try it, the best way would be to keep yourself as hydrated as possible and make sure you get 1200 calories a day, most likely from drinking something like fruit juice. Make sure you get lots of vitamins, or your body will hate you. :P

Bear in mind that 2 weeks is unrealistic. 24 to 48 hours is all you should do at once. Some people fast for this length of time once a month, but it really is just more effective to combine diet and exercise and not look for a miracle cure. There isn't any, unfortunately.

I did a macrobiotic fast for three days. the only thing you could eat was brown rice. it was really hard and I had horrible cravings. I felt really tired but atleast with this type of fasting you can eat something. If you are going to fast I would try to clear as much food that will tempt you out of your house. and dont do over a atime when you will need to think (like a big test) because it will take all the energy out of you physically and mentally.

I dont really fasting is the best technique to lose weight. I did lose 5 lbs but the day I started eating again I gained it back. In the beginning you will lose weight by fasting but eventully your body will think you are starving and will hang on to every ounce of fat on you and the weight wont come of as easily. and it could damage your metabolism and make it even harder to lose that weight in the future. is it really worth it? especially if all that food deprivation will go to waste as soon as you start eating a little more normally (and trust me after seriously fasting your body is going to store up every calorie because it thinks that you might starve again)

If you want to lose weight I would recommend excercising moderately (start out slowly) and as far as food eat a big healthy breakfast, a satisfying lunch and then a snack og something moderately healthy at about 3 p.m.. then skip dinner or if need be, somedays have a light, early dinner(the earlier you eat the more time your body has to burn off extra calories). and if you ever get the evening urge to raid the refrigerator do something else as distraction like talk on the phone, get on the computer or take a walk. this is much healthier than a fast and it works better at maintaining weight loss.

sorry this is so long but I wish this is something that somebody would have told me a long time ago. hope it helps you!

Well in my opinion to lose weight fasting is not enough! What's the use of fasting one day and eating a load on the other days? It is firstly important to control your daily diet. Eat less chicken, meat,...and specially avoid non veg foods. It's far better to have a veg diet as it has far more nutritive elements (i.e, Vitamins, minerals and the most important thing-fibres). Well i'm not publicitising veg diet i'm simply stating the fact that this is the best diet. But however an oily veg diet will not be of much help! Cut down on fatty and oily foods. Alongside it is also beneficial

to practice a sport and do some yoga exercises. If you have such healthy eating habits, automatically you'll become fit!! I would then say that there is no real need to fast!!!!!

Ryoga316 seems to have the best and most informative response. I was going to say much of what was already said, but I just want to add that you really should check with a doctor before beginning any fast. Knowing your conditions with your health prior to a fast can at least inform you of some things. I found out that I had high blood pressure a while back and it was because I was going to start a diet and wanted to make sure of my health - I might not have known. Fasting does give the body and organs a rest - and it is also a time when you can think, pray and meditate. Use the time wisely - and you don't have to tell everybody what you're doing. It's your personal time with you and your body. Good luck to you!

A fast is a fast. If you fast, you don't eat or drink anything except water, how healthy is that?

You can do a partial fast and drink fruit juices to get the needed vitamins.

Overall, fasting is not healthy. When you starve your body of the nutrients it needs, it begins to use vital organs to sustain itself.

When you fast, you will lose weight but as soon as you break the fast, you will gain all your weight back plus some extra.

You don't say how old you are but I think you are very young so I will tell you my story.

When I was sixteen I was ideal weight. I played basketball, volleyball and badminton, I was a cheerleader and had physical education 3 times a week. I thought I was fat so I tried every fad diet in the book, Lose 10 pounds in 1 week, fasting you name it and I did lose weight just like it said but when I stopped, I gained it all back plus 2 extra. Over the years, I continued to do that until in the end at 23 years old, I was 197 lbs. Please don't fast. Unless you are very much over weight, do not diet at all just eat well and keep active.

I know there are sometimes Spiritual/Religious reasons for a fast, but to kickstart weight loss fasting is definitely not the way to go. By fasting you actually lose muscle and once you start eating again that can easily be turned into fat. Fasting also slows your metabolism which is never good for losing weight.

If you're feeling as though you need to cleanse your body as part of your weight loss program, that's easily done by eating fruits and vegetables that are low in sugar content. Also by eating whole grains instead of breads that are made with enriched flour, etc.

As a Muslim, I fast for 30 days during Ramadan. Fasting is healthy because it releases all the toxins in your body. If you're serious about fasting. Try these:

1) Eat a full breakfast before the sun rises (usually 3 or 4 am).

2) Don't eat or drink anything until the sun totally sets

3) Break your fast by eating soft food (soup, bread, fruit) in small portions

4) Start slowly by fasting for 3 days (you can increase the length of your fast as long as you wish, but not over 30 days). But consult a doctor first before fasting.

5) Fast 3 days every month. Fast 30 days in 1 year.

Good luck. Peace

If by fast you mean not eating anything I would recommend that you only do it two days a week and not in a row. Eat smaller meals the day before you fast. And don't overeat the day after. Like everyone else said don't exercise when you are fasting.

I fast occasionally when I think my gut is getting too big but I'm not in a hurry to lose weight so I only do it one day a week. Most of the time I just eat smaller portions. I'm naturally thin anyway so a beer belly doesn't fit my body.

Fasting is not for losing weight. There's just no way that your body can handle things when you do it like that. I'm talking from experience. I used to cut weight for wrestling by fasting and spitting into a cup. Here's what happened to me:

-- I was miserable

-- I felt WORSE about who I am, it didn't matter that I had lost the weight

-- I started having stomach problems

-- I started getting nervous problems

It's just not worth it.

Fasting can do a lot of great things for you on other levels (spiritually and emotionally), but this is for short periods (one or two meals) at long intervals (never more frequent than monthly). I do this on a monthly basis and use the proceeds of that fast to assist the poor. I find that fills me with spiritual insight and love, and it works for me. However, if you're doing it to lose weight, you're not going to get the emotional and spiritual gains that can come from the practice.

You might want to consider a purge, a specialized diet that assists you in cleaning out your system. You want to find one that is doctor recommended. Over time, your body builds up all sorts of icky stuff--chemicals that make you feel slow and constricted. I've heard from people that have used purges that it was a remarkeable experience, although I've never done one. Again, I'd recommend finding one that is doctor approved, else this could be as dangerous as a fast. When you're going through a purge, your body's often going to release stuff every way: throwing up, diarrhea, sweats, and cold symptoms (nasal drip).

The bottom line is you get to accept yourself for who you are. Until you learn to love yourself, all diets, exercise programs, etc. are just going to bring more aggrevation and nervousness in your life.

Good luck!

Yes, there are plenty of healthy ways to fast, but the longer you fast, the safer it is for you to do it in a special clinic or spa. A one-day fast at home every week is ok and relatively easy, but longer fasts may need supervision, especially if it is your first time. Fasting is not like playing cards. It is something very serious.

Now, I don't think fasting will necessarily help you in your specific quest. Of course, if you stop eating and remain so for a few days, you will lose fat and muscle. You will get slim. But the risk is that you may get all the weight back again when you start to eat, because your body will be ready to assimilate optimally.

I think fasting is better used for detoxifying rather than for slimming.

If you really want to get slim, you must work out and follow a healthy and adequate eating plan, cutting down on carbs (but not eliminating them completely) and increasing the intake of fiber and protein.

It is difficult to give you a ready-to-follow diet here, but if you go to my yahoo discussion group (address below), we might find a way to talk about it.

It sound like this is the first time you're doing it. If so, then I would recommend working out and eating a healthy diet for a couple of months before trying this so as not to shock your system. After that, try an all-fruit fast for a day. Then, try a healthy juice fast, making sure to incorporate cleansing vegetable juices (beets, celery, carrots). Also, the key to a healthy fast is not to have processed sugars, so stay away from fast food smoothies and drinks. Also make sure that you're not doing any rigorous activity during the day. If you want to keep up your activity, then take a leisurely walk in the park, making sure you keep yourself hydrated. Good Luck!

You definitely do not want to try the FASTING way. That is much too dangerous! Most of the time when you lose weight too fast it will come back just as fast. Drink lots of water, if you need taste drink no more than 1 or 2 diet sodas or a sugarless drink a day. Cut out your potatoes and bread and eat anything else you want just smaller portions. I lost several pounds this way fast. Good Luck!

Fasting is not a good idea because the body starts consuming its protein first, which is why people feel so lousy fasting. It's very hard on your body. If you're serious about losing weight, it's better to change the way you eat. Eating lots of the 'right' stuff is a much better bet.

Here's a plan for you.

Start your day with 1/3 to 1/2 cup oat bran or oatmeal mixed with a cup or less of water, cooked in the microwave for 3 minutes. . Add 2 big spoonsful of plain yogurt, a few cranberries or raisons, some splenda for sweetness, and some 2% milk. Eat the whole bowl. But don't stop there ... eat half of any fruit as well ... apple, banana, mango, papaya, orange, etc. Get up earlier and have a relaxing breakfast.

Chop or shred a huge bunch of vegetables every three days or so ... zucchini, carrots, celery, parsley, yellow squash, etc. Add some oregano or other herb you like, saute them lightly, then melt a little feta cheese at the last minute. Keep this 'stash' covered tightly in the refrigerator, and take out a cup or more to add to LOTS of chopped lettuce (1/2 a head at a time) for both lunch and dinner. Romaine, green leaf, butter, red leaf or spring mix ... not iceberg. You can also add tomatoes, peppers, etc. Make it Asian with chopped ginger, light soy sauce, and a tiny bit of sesame oil. Or make it Greek with more oregano and feta, a couple of olives, and some chopped cucumber and tomatoes. Or make it Italian with some Paul Newman low-fat olive oil and vinegar dressing ... just a little, though.

Roast chicken breasts or turkey breast in a covered pan with herbs like oregano, thyme or rosemary. Keep it covered the entire time and you will have a delicious juice to use in place of dressing on your lettuce and vegetables.

Get a food scale and measure out a full 8 ozs. of chopped and cooked vegetables and lettuce, and 4 ozs. of protein. This is a ton of food ... you may have a hard time getting it all down ... but eat the entire 12 ozs each time. Make your meals interesting ... experiment.

Other proteins to add can be 4 ozs. salmon poached in fruit juice, water-packed tuna and lemon juice, steak sliced thinly for stroganoff sauteed with a little garlic salt, a hard-boiled egg and dill, 2 one inch cubes of cheese.

NO snacking. Stop eating all wheat products ... which includes all bread. Drink lots of tea with splenda. Forget sodas. Coffee is fine with splenda and 2% milk.

Eat like this for a week and you will be amazed at how much weight you will lose, how good you will feel ... people have eaten this way and gone off all their medications! It's simple and almost fool proof.

Be mindful of each bite, and have fun with it!

Good luck.

Fasting has been shown to be an unhealthy way to lose weight, and it seems to come right back anyway.

A better way is to eat much less at each meal. Your body and mind may tell you that you are still hungry, but I have found that just eating a smaller portion will keep you healthy while giving you less calories.

I have tried this and it works. When you feel hungry, eat a small healthy meal. Even if you feel you are still hungry, don't give in, it will pass. All it takes is will power.

The human body can be maintained on much less than most people in this country eat. It is a natural thin for us to feel hungry because we once had to eat everything we could find just to survive. It is instinct. Don't give in to the urge!

Best of luck to you.

Fast means that you don't have to eat for some time so that your stomach get a rest. What do you mean by a healthy way to fast?.Anyways the fact i understand is that you want to lose your weight so my dear friend when you fast ,you don't eat things and in this way ,you don't get energy and when no energy no work.Fast for three weeks have surely lose his wait but not only weight he would have lost all the basic facts which body need so it would be better to keep eating but in small quantity so you keep getting energy and your wait become less.

1.Daily do exercise

2.Stop eating so much sugar and junk food and drinks

3.Don't sleep too much

4.Move here and there in home means that house hold chores

5.Eat less but healthy with less fats.

If you want to kept a fast so follow the way

Eat very early morning about 4.00 am or 3.00 so that you wake up early, sleeping to much also cause fatness. In the evening time or its about night at 18.00 means 06.00 pm at night and sleep early .Try this, it would help you allot .Good luck.

No!.. if anyone says there is a healthy way to fast they are killing you. Don't do it! I mean it.. Fasting is eating water, that's it! You lose fat, sure.. but hell, you lose muscles too.. (if ya got any that is.. let's hope ya do.) You sound too desperate here to lose weight. Why? You'll put it right back on. (And I should know, hon.. I lost 75 pounds 4..5 years ago and kept it off..) Know how? I changed ME.. the person I was.. I changed me.. and yet.. I was flexible enough to know when I craved chocolate I couldn't have a Snickers (I eat chocolate chips.. no kidding.. one at a time.. right outta the bag.) I always loved exercise, was a tomboy as a kid.. So I got wild w/that.. I am a marathon runner (up to 5 miles a day now) and also a power lifter (as my husband is one.. got a garageful of junk.. that helps.. U can get a spa membership tho..) I am a vegetarian.. I eat 2, 3 cans of beans (no, don't gas up the place.. your system gets used to it.. no kidding.. I smell up the place pretty bad tho when I eat iron/raisins, broccoli or cauliflower.. pu) daily. You do a small bit every day BUT every tiny thing you do is like money in the bank! You change how you think.. I used to love fast food and would 'check out' every restaurant I drove by. Now what makes me wild w/desire is a salad. I never did like red meat, even as a child by the way.. I don't know.. it all 'works.' Hell, I always said the fastest way to gain weight was to 'go on a diet.' yo-yo dieting syndrome's deadly (never works either.) I can't wait right now to get up and run my 5 miles and eat beans w/vegetables, fruit juice for my breakfast.. I CAN't WAIT!!! (I'm so hooked, huh?) lmao You know all the stuff to do to lose weight.. (everybody does) but they are too lazy to DO it.. they want to go to Applebees, 'walk around the mall,' drive to work, sit at a desk, drive home, sit at home.. it sux!

Dear, the only healthy way to lose weight is by cutting portion size and doing EXCERCISE.There is no easy way out so pls dont get into any short cut, it's just not good for your body.I lost eight kgs after having a child by cutting my portion size and doing 20 min excercise three days a wk.I also had at least 2 servings of fruit every day along with a bowl of salad. If you are not sure what may work for you professionals like Jenny Craig or Weight watchers may also help you.Good luck with whatever you decide. It's just a matter of believing you can do it and go for it.

If you drink lots of water and take vitamin pills, it's not too bad for a few days; I would not recommend more than a week, in any case. The hard part is getting back into eating slowly, so that you don't give yourself an upset. Frankly, I would not recommend fasting for more than 48 hours at a time. But if you eat pretty healthy the rest of the time, you can do those 48 hours pretty often; maybe even every week, or every other week.

Hi! I read in a natural cures book that a Juice Fast is one of the fastest and healthiest ways to lose weight. It will completely detoxify your body. I also read that is has helped many people quit smoking. You can also drink only water and eat only fruits and vegetables. (The juice has more calories than just the fruit!) Within 4 days of doing this, I lost TWELVE pounds!!! Just be sure that whenever you go off of the diet, go off slow and don't take in too many calories the next few days after!! Hope this works for you as well as it has for me!

There is NO way to fast safely. When you fast your body starts eating itself. Yes fasting does help you lose weight, temporarily. When you fast your bodies metabolism gets slowed down. So you may lose the weight you want now, but you will gain it all back (if not more) when you get out of your routine. Fasting is a very bad idea.

For best results on losing weight, I suggest you eat healty foods and limit them, and try to avoid bad foods. Make a five day routine of working out, eating healthy, and keeping your day active. On the weekends you can let yourself go out and eat SOME unhealthy foods (but still limit them). Doing so keeps your metabolism up to speed. Also, if there is a certain spot that you want to lose the weight in, target that muscle group and do repititions. With this advice it may still take you a while to get you to where you want to be, but you won't be killing yourself in the process. It is the safest way to lose weight. Work out, eat healthy (only eat when you are hungry...when you are eating and you aren't hungry anymore, stop eating, dont over indulge) and, keep up on it.

If you are already working out, this will definitely work for you. Fast from all meat. You can have fish once in a while, as the protien keeps your brain functioning properly, but no seafood (shrimp, crab, scallops, etc.). If you eat tuna, use NO mayo in it. Eat it dry (sounds gross, but only after the first couple of bites). Don't use any butter, and use only olive oil (not canola or the other "light" oils--olive oil is pressed & contains good properties for your blood) . Eat mostly fruits and vegetables as raw as you can. PARTICULARLY vegetables. The grocery stores sell frozen veggies in boxes, which are the perfect size for a single meal.

Now when I did this fast, I would fast for 5 days, then eat whatever I wanted the remaining 2. After 1 month, I'd lost 20 lbs and toned up beautifully.

Natural juices and tons of water work best. Two weeks is about the maximum time you should fast, then things in your body begin to shut down. If the issue is weight loss, trust me, the weight will return unless you are diligent about exercise and watching what you eat. I wasn't diligent (just fasted to look great for an event), and all the weight returned (but I felt wonderful yet somewhat dizzy at the event). Also, don't get up fast while fasting, it will make you dizzy, your emotions might be on edge, your thinking might be clouded, and you'll do things slower than usual.

Your body strives for balance. Just like it tries to always keep the same temperature, so it always tries to keep the same weight. It depends on how long you have felt yourself overweight, because your body's sense of where you shoud be will change the longer you are overweight. If you insist on fasting, stock up on organic fruit juices. Fasting is not an answer to what I assume is your deal, however, though it can be quite cleansing and that's always good. But if you're looking for a quick fix, sorry, but there isn't one and fasting is just another thing that won't work. Working out is the best thing you can do. Above all, be patient. Rootin' for ya.

Yes, there is. I did it for 2 weeks at a time and lost 20 pounds. First increase your water intake to 64 oz per day, eat only fruit and drink water during the day. At night(before 7PM) eat one meal consisting of meat and veggies. You can have one small helping of something from the starch contents(baked potato, rice, etc...) The real key is your water intake. Excises 3 times a week for 30 to 45 minutes. You can walk the mall. Start taking the steps at work. Also you might try a colon cleaning once a month. Check out natural cures.com. I recommend doing this in 2 week intervals. Best of luck

There are lots of different fastings options out there to ensure your health while you do so.

There are tea fasts, which revolve around detoxing teas (they sell special detox tea, but ginger and green teas are also good for detoxing.)

There are juice fasts, which use juices like lemon and cranberry for detoxing.

There is also a popular mixture which i have actually tried myself, consisting of water, lemon juice, cayanne pepper and maple syrup. The exact amount of each can be found on the internet.

Things to remember when fasting:

Drink lots of water! Don't overwork yourself- if you feel like excersising, do something calm like yoga. If you feel dizzy, faint, or anything else, it might be a sign that your sugar is low. Don't be afraid to supplement the fast with a piece of fruit like an orange, which will help raise it back to normal.

Also, don't be too disappointed if you don't drop a lot of weight when fasting. Everyone's body is different, and fasting is mostly about detoxing.

Good luck, hope this helped!

I want to add that fasting is NOT unhealthy. If you are using it as an excuse to starve yourself, then it is, but if you are simply fasting to kick start a diet or to detox, you are FINE.

Your body is better suited for fasting than it is for overeating. Fasting has been done for thousands of years by many different groups of people for reasons that range to religious ceremony to weight loss to detoxing your organs. As long as you have every intention of eating right after your fast, and you are not in danger of becoming anorexic, fasting is a healthy and effective option.

the idea behind a fast helping you lose weight is that your stomach will shrink and when you start to eat again you will not be as hungry. The best way for you to go about doing this is to slowly decrease the amount of food you eat until you fast for a day and then slowly increase until you are at an amount that will sustain the desired weight.

Fasting(starving yourself) is not good for you. If you eat normally the body always has a readily available supply of nutrients and energy. Stop eating for more than a few hours and these reserves of easily accessible nutrients are deminished and the body starts to breakdown body tissues to get the fuel it needs for vital processes. It also slows down you metabolism in an effort to conserve energy as it will 'think' there is a food shortage/famine and so it goes into survival mode. The damage therfore is lower energy levels, and lower endurance levels almost immediately, and as sugar levels drop some nausia and weakness may result. As the body breaks down tissue (over a longer fast) you lose muscle as well as fat. There is also issues about loss of electrolites if you only drink water. This can lead to a number of conditions and ultimately can kill. Longterm starvation can cause irriparable damage to all organs and muscles, shortening your life. THEREFORE its best to eat lightly and healthily if you want to lose weight. Fad eating and starving are not good for you ever.

Would even shorter fasting periods provide any benefit? It would be interesting to see if any benefit could be derived by eating very day but having at least 12 hour stretches every day when no food is consumed. That might be more achievable. Don't eat before bedtime and then entirely skip breakfast and make lunch be the first meal of the day.

Even if intermittent fasting is eventually shown to deliver real human health benefits (and I expect it will) few people are going to be up for fasting every other day. Though perhaps more people could manage to do intermittent fasting than can manage to stay on a calorie restriction diet.

However, once safe appetite suppressant drugs are developed fasting could become a lot easier and may become popular as a method to slow aging and lower the risk of degenerative diseases. Appetite suppressants that could work for differing lengths of time would be handy. One could take an appetite suppressant for 12 hours or 24 hours depending on your fasting regime.

Another approach that may eventualy obviate the need for fasting is a class of drugs called calorie restriction mimetics. The idea behind calorie restriction mimetics (which are the subject of active research in a number of labs) is that they'll fool your metabolism into thinking you haven't eaten. Then your cells would throw themselves into the same state they go into when they are not getting as much calories. Appetite suppressants would remain useful for anyone who is overweight. But the benefit of fasting would be delivered by a separate calorie restriction mimetic drug.

Update: A previous study found that rodents genetically engineered to have less fat in fat cells lived longer without calorie restriction. This is not surprising because fat cells appear to excrete pro-inflammatory compounds. In fact. Rudolph Liebel of Columbia University says adipose fat cells excrete at least 25 hormones and other signalling compounds including adiponectin and resistin. The fatter you get the bigger the problem you'll have with accumulated damage from chronic inflammation. If we can develop treatments that prevent fat cells from converting excess calories into fat then we may be able to get many of the benefits of calorie restriction.

Also, see my previous post which reports that rodents which were made to skip meals had lower blood insulin and their brains were more resistant to damage from neurotoxins. Being skinny is good. Skipping meals is good too.

Before starting a fast you should be in good physical shape. There is a fast called the Master Cleanse be Stanley Burrows in his book Healing For the Age Of Enlightenment. The basic idea is to start slow only 1-3 days at first. You drink plenty of water with fresh lemon juice and a dash of Cayanne Pepper added to it. You may add a teaspoon of honey to it if you have issues with blood sugar. The lemon helps cleanse and shirnks your stomach. This fast really works. It leaves you clear headed and energized. Good luck!

Don't fast for long. Maybe a day or so, if by fasting you mean nothing but water. If you mean eating very little, then the older you are the more you should consider doing this anyway, even if you are not trying to lose much weight.

Yes, there is. You shouldn't just stop eating... that is very bad. You want to slow down your intake of food. If you eat 3 full meals now... cut down to two and a snack for lunch. Then get rid of the snack after a couple days. Then turn breakfast into a snack. Then move the breakfast snack to lunch. Then, snack for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Finally, snack only for breakfast and dinner.

If you just stop eating all at once, you can do your body serious damage... possibly kill yourself (I almost died in HS because of this). Take your time limiting the amount of food you eat, and never completely stop eating. At the least, get down to a few snacks a day... your body NEEDS food. Fasting is actually good for you in moderation, so long as it is done in mediocrity.

There have been tons of studies lately that limiting the calories you eat a day can actually lengthen your life span. When you begin to exercise, you should eat a little extra to replenish what you burned in the gym.

Key is, do not go crazy on this.

There are different ways of fasting for different types of people. Some may fast by drinking water only for 2 weeks. A family friend of ours did this for the purpose of cleansing her system, not for fasting, and yet she lost some pounds. Another way would be to gradually attune your body to eating lesser sweet and starchy food and dairy products everyday until your body gets used to the habit. You can still eat a lot but the meat should be leaner and you should eat more of fruits and vegetables. A doctor once told me that eating more than one cup of rice turns to sugar in your body and this sugar is then stored in your body, making you grow fat. Also avoid beverages especially colas and beer. All these tips can help you to fast and get thinner the healthy way!!!

I thought people could survive for a couple of weeks at least without food as long as they drink.

I've gone days without eating before, (not as long as two weeks) and weight seems to just fall off. My stomach shrinks too so when I do eat again it doesn't take much to fill it. I suspect the weight I lose is mostly water and not fat though.

However I am not the kind of person who has dizzy spells and faints through lack of food. If you are, I'd definately not advise fasting.

If you do want to try, I'd say make sure you drink plenty of fluids and get plenty of rest. If you do begin to feel unwell and can't stand the hunger, eat.

I'll also say this, don't get obsessed about your weight. Love yourself.

My family and I fast a month every year, so I know what you're going through, well first off, the healthiest way to fast goes like this:

1)wake yourself up really early in the morning say like 4:30, 5:00 or so and eat something light to keep you going throughout the day without eating and go to sleep again.

2)don't tire yourself at work if you do have a job

3)Keep yourself controlled: don't get yourself in a fight or get yourself angry, that makes you break your fast

4)breakyour fast at sunset say 6:30 or so, don't fast the whole day, you'll get sick!(my doc says that's how a healthy person fasts)

don't chew gum, all those flavors go inside your stomache which makes it known that you have broken your fast,

You can keep fasting for 3-4 weeks fasting.

just don't get tired and don't get angry

Hope this works!

Woah, isn't it weird how our avatars look alike?!

Fasting is not the way to jump start a diet.. it is the wrong way. Your body will go into starvation mode, your metabolism with slow down and it will take a week to get it going again. You want you body running at a high rate of metabolism to loose weight. I lost 8 pounds in one week by eating 1200 calories of low fat food and exercising 3 times a week for 45 minutes (that included 15minutes devoted to warming up and cooling down) I walked on a treadmill (you need to know how to use a treadmill correctly to get results). Good Luck and Good Health to you.

The term 'fast' means different things to different ppl. Some term fasting as not eating any solid foods but water and juices are fine, while others abstain fromm everything (solids, liquids and incl. water). So, I am assuming you refer to the later.

Make sure you eat something wholesome (eg: whole grains - not the refined carbohydrate stuff) before you begin your fast and ensure that you have replenished on your liquids sufficiently the day before - ie: Drink plenty of water (at least 8 glasses). During the 12 - 24 hrs you are fasting, refrain from intense physical activities that could lead to loss of body fluid (ie: sweat) and just chill out. AVOID caffeine at all costs the day before you start your fast as caffeine is a diuretic - it makes you go to the loo and you lose water - NOT a good thing.

:)

Good luck!

decision to either move forward with the fast or decline.

Drink plenty of water, you don't want to stop drinking. You will need to drink 8-10 8oz. of water each day. You can fast on fruit and or veggies.

Don't stop eating all together because if you do you will actually gain more weight when you start eating again. Your body's metabolism will slow way down since it will think you are starving.

You will have better success with eating friuts and veggies.

I hope you will have success like I did. Remember don't give into the cravings. :)

Ok if I respect that you want to get skinny and im ok with that but dont overdose on pills and such. my friend overdosed and now his skin is apery thin and needs two canes to walk. Hes only 55. I suggest fruits vegetables and water. Also I have this workout you do. I have an inground pool with the porch next to the metal stairs. I put my feet tilting off the porch and grab onto the bars and do push ups if you dont have much muscle you should do 5 wait 30 seconds to a minute and do that for 4 sets. It works triceps biceps deltiods chest and abs. Do more when you feel you are ready......

I will not recommend what i think is safe to fast because it varies from person to person; however, I will tell you what I do when I feel like I need to fast. I do fasting for health reason as well as loose weight. I tried many methods but the LEMON DIET by Master Cleanser is the one that works best for me and my son who is 17years old. If you know how to use your search engine, look up the word "Master Cleanser" you can read the entire on the internet and you will find the recipe for LEMON DIET. Bear in mind that 2 weeks is unrealistic. 24 to 48 hours is all you should do at once. Some people fast for this length of time once a month, but it really is just more effective to combine diet and exercise and not look for a miracle cure. There isn't any, unfortunately.

Fasting is not good for your body. I have heard from a nutritionist that some people say that fasting one day out of the week is actually good for your body but that is contraversal.

Fasting for any amount of time is hard on your body. It is hard on your metabolism especially. Your body compenstate for the lack of food by slowing down your metabolism and then when you start eating normal again you will not burn calories like you used to.

Fasting for more than a day at a time is not recommended by any health professional.

Fasting is usually done as a sacrifice to God showing that you will give up all wordly possessions to honor him, you really shouldn't do it just to loose weight. But if you did decide to do it the most important thing is to drink alot of water the body can go without food for a substantial amount of time before it dies but it can only go without water for about 4 days before sickness and weakness set in. So anyways I hope I helped. Good Luck.

When you start eating again, only have a little at a time and eat lightly. The problem is when you fast your body gets used to functioning on nothing and then when you start eating again the body wants to store up more in fat in case there is a further food shortage.

Adding broth or Miso to your diet while you are fasting is the best idea, and include plenty of water and tea.

the right amount of weight that the average person should hope and try to lose a week when eating and working out correctly is something like 1 or 2 pounds a week. That is a good, healthy, safe, smart, effective amount to lose. That right there is fast weight loss. So if you are losing weight at that speed, then hang on tight, because you are going the maximum weight loss speed limit! Yup, 1 or 2 pounds lost a week. Not as fast as most people would hope for, but sadly, that's just the way it is. You just can't lose weight fast, or at least, as fast as many people would like to. Aside from all of the obvious health risks and possible negatives of losing any more than that a week, losing anymore than 1 or 2 pounds a week means you are losing muscle, not fat. As you can guess, that's not good.

The next question someone might have now is about all of those pills and products that promise fast weight loss. And they back up their claims too. They show before and after pictures of people who lost a lot of a weight in a very short amount of time. They have pictures!!!! They can't be lying!!!! These are good people! They only want to help people lose weight fast!! They would never lie just to get our money right?!?!?!?!? WRONG! Before and after pictures are the biggest bunch of bullshit there is. Before and after pictures are so faked that I am having trouble typing this just laughing at the thought of them being actual truthful pictures showing the great results someone got with whatever useless fast weight loss crap they are trying to sell you. Aside from the obvious easy ways of faking them such as putting the head on another body (it's been done) or showing real before and after pictures, except that they were taken 5 years apart instead of 6 weeks apart like they claim (it's been done too), another wonderful faking method is used that some people don't think of. They take a person with an already great body (who got that way by working out correctly and eating right for years) and call that the "after picture." They then get this same person to gain weight. Once they gain enough, they take a picture and call it the "before picture." Yes ladies and gentleman, fast weight loss at it's best!

But my all time favorite lose weight fast bullshit is still to come. This next one always puts a smile on my face, and if you look close enough, you will see it too. There are commercials on TV for all kinds of gimmick weight loss diets and pills and products that all promise fast weight loss. First they bullshit to you... whoops, sorry... I meant "tell you the amazing features of their product" and then show you people, actual people, who used this product or diet and were able lose weight fast. Sometimes they just show their "real" before and after pictures, but sometimes they have the actual people standing there talking. They show you a before picture while this person talks over it and says "I hated my body. I tried everything but nothing ever worked... UNTIL NOW!!!! I lost 50 pounds using ::insert useless crap here:: in just 4 WEEKS and look at me now!!" As funny as it already is, that isn't even the half of it yet. Here comes the real best part. At this point in the commercial, if you put on your glasses, walk all the way up to your TV, bend down, and put your face 2 inches from the screen.... if you look close enough, in small tiny letters that you can just barely read, you will see writing that says something like: "These results are not typical." Excuse me for a second... HAHAHAHAHA!!!

You're welcome.

Thanks.

My personal opinion ( which stems directly from my own experience) is that fasting can make you prone to developing an eating disorder. When you deprive yourself of something for a long time then things can get control over you and you cannot stop compensating.

I would not recommend it.

My mom fasts but for a spiritual / religious reasons and that keeps her going.

Me - I would become preoccupied with how much weight I lose, how I look, ect. And then it would turn ugly.

Good luck.

Well if it's not fasting for religious reasons than you are allowed to drink, so definitely drink something like Pedialyte to prevent you from getting sick. The easy way to lose weight, though not very quick, is to cut calories. Just eat smaller portions ALL THE TIME and pass on extras. Also, drink water rather than juice or pop.

Fasting is usually meant to last only a few days. Not two weeks. The purpose of fasting for weight loss is merely to help shrink your stomach a bit so you will feel full sooner and STOP eating so much. Really, please don't fast for more than a few days. Longer than a few days usually has bad end results. While you fast for the few days remember water is very critical for overall positive results.

First of all, fasting is for you to build on your spirituality with God, not to loose weight. If you want to loose weight in a healthy way, don't go about it like that. Just exercise and that should help. Eat healthy foods and alot of fruit, that way your body will balance itself. I fast so I should know, I'm also a person that focuses on my health; these tips should help you. If you really want to fast though, make sure you drink alot of water.

Fasting is not a good way to begin losing weight. It is counter productive. You stop eating, your body goes into "starvation mode" and holds onto its store of fat to get through the famine it thinks you are experiencing.

You need to employ the ol' Susan Powder (?) principal: You gotta eat, and you gotta move! Taking in less calories (eating) and moving (exercise) will help you met your goal in a healthy way. You didn't put on the excess overnight. It won't come off overnight.

If you must fast, do not go without liquids. You need water (and nutrition) to support your cellular structure. You could do bigtime damage to your organs if you deprive them of water. You could literally "dry up!"

See your doctor for sensible weightloss options. Good things come to those who wait! Taking off 1-2 pounds a week is a permanent way to keep it off. Change of eating habits (eliminate excessive sugar, fat and empty calories) and a sensible diet, small portions, exercise and patience should do the trick! See the doctor.

For years I've struggled with my weight, and have found that eating smaller portions more often while working out has been the best way to go! Always ask your Dr. first if you,re going to try something other than a healthy lifestyle. Fad diets and fasting DO NOT WORK over the long haul. (the voice of experience)

I would strongly advise against fasting as the body percieves this as a famine and reacts by slowing your metabolism and storing more fat. If the fast continues for long enough the body will start to cannabalize your muscle tissue ( this is what helps you burn fat in the first place) and you will end up with a greater fat to muscle ratio. Medical and sports experts agree that a loss of greater than 2 pounds per week is muscle and water as the body can not burn more than 2 lbs of fat per week.

The question really seems to come from a healthy mind ! Normally it is asked this way "Is there a way to fast to improve heath; can fasting help reducing fat" etc.. The WAY to fast , should indeed be a healthy one.

Well then, please see if it is possible to experience 'empty stomach' (say, after a meal, or intake), and then experience the real hunger! ( instead of trying to imagine that 'now my stomach feels hungry' when it is just empty after the food put in it has reasonably got digested !) If you can decide to eat only when it is hungry rather than when it is just empty, then it is a healthy way indeed to FAST BETWEEN MEALS !

If you care to understand this, some animals like lion etc , eat once in about 4 to 7 days (they say, the animal experts) and not thrice a day. Surely, the stomach of such animal should be becoming 'empty' much earlier than its next meal. It means, they seem to be more sensible in the matter of 'when to eat next' than their modern counter-parts , to wait till they are hungry !

To begin with, I feel, even this much of fasting should really help without any fear of 'side or after effects', like ulcers, stomach burns, etc !

Fasting can be done in many ways. Many religous fasts that lasts for weeks or months are not times where eating is completely stoped. No one could live for that long without food.

I suggest lowering your food intake a little more every day. Do not do anything immediatly.

Fasting should be done not to lose weight but to become closer to God, to purify your body, and to cleanse your soul. It is unhealthy to fast to lose weight. Because once you begin to eat again you will gain all the weight back plus some extra. A healthy fast would be from one to three days beginning with praying for Gods strength to sustain you. Good Luck to you!!

3 day fast water only...do it once and DO NOT pig out when its over you'll get sick...start eating again slowly..small meals...after that your stomach will have shrunk so when you feel hungry just eat until you feel full, dont force yourself to "finish the plate". two or 3 months later do it again for 3 days....after that your stomach will listen to you and you will be in control of it instead of it being in control of you. i dont recommend going more than 3 days unless you are doing it for religeous reasons...3 is enough to accomplish the desired results you are seeking...i speak from experience. Its been over 5 years since i decided to fast, and twice was enough to teach my stomach to obey me...it still listens. i plan on fasting again soon but its more for the reason to give my body a break from digestion...i believe fasting is a very healthy thing to do if its not taken to extremes.

as a former personal trainer, fasting and working out can be dangerous. fasting alone can mess up your metoblism for years, causing your body to store more fat than it already does. I could write a book on my personal expirences in fitness, but get to the book store and get the book "body for life". I have seen so many people radically change their lives with this simple program. the book teaches you to change your views of food and fitness. If you follow it I promise it will work, just give it time (5 - 6 months) and you will see drasic results.

Here is what you need to do, if you are serious about losing weight and keeping it off. Eat 6 small meals a day about every 4 hours. Here what that will do for you, your metabolism will increase (i.e. Loose weight) and you will have more engry. If you go on a diet and eat less, your metabolism will slow down and store to fat. That is why diets dont work. Only the size of your fist, carbs (examples:baked potato, pasta, oatmeal, beans, corn, melon, apples, fat free yogurt, whole wheat breads)in one and protien (examples:chicken breast, swordfish, shrimp, turkey breast) in the other. You can also eat vegetables and salads with any meal, they dont have none or little fat). 30min cardo exercise every day. Any of these(examples: walking, jogging, swimming, running, biking, ect), Monday cardo, tues upper body (arms: curls, tricep extensions, pull ups, front press)(abdominals: leg pull crunch, leg raises), (chest: bench press, butterfly, pullover)(shoulders: front press, arm pullover, cross county skier machine)(back:seated row, lat pull downs, back extension)(YOU DONT HAVE TO DO IN ONE DAY, mix it up) wed cardo, thurs lower body (legs: leg pull, leg press, squats, lounges) fri cardo, sat upper. Sunday eat anything you want and dont exercising, you do this on sunday so your body doesnt go into starvation mode. YOU NEED TO TAKE SUNDAY OFF. If you stilck with this you will have a great body. also drink aleast 8oz of water daily! To fast you don't have to give up food all the way just certain things such as: soda, fast food, meat with a lot of fat. Look at what the food has in it. There are good fats and bad ones. Try not to eat any thing with enriched flour or to corn syrup in it. Try eating organic food.

ok... first of all, it depends......

if you fast because of religious reasons (i.e. no meat/poultry/fish/dairy/milk).... what you can do is to drink a lot of water, eat fruit (really important), eat beans (also important), and eat vegetables (tomato, lettuce, cucumber, onion, etc),... you wont get all the stuff you need from meat, but some of those mentioned above have enough nutrients to keep you healthy...

Total fasting is not good for you if you want to loose weight, it can work the other way around....

try to excersice a little too... ohhhhhh and i almost forgot... soy is good for protein replacement...!

i hope you have a good start with this

Cesar Chavez did periodic fasts, where he was closely monitored and fed, I beleive, a cup of milk each day. Mahatma Ghandi truely fasted, accepting only water. Since water offers no nutritional value, I consider this a genuine fast.

Fast is not healthy. What happened wen you do it is you lose all the water in your body. Then you lose electrolytes and potassium that make your heart work properly...the cells and the body will try to retain all as a defend mechanism. But still you can cause an unbalance in your body and make your heart stop....of course you can do what you want.......good luck

What I HAVEN'T READ is one key item:

Do NOT eat a lot when you return from your fast. You haven't eaten solid foods, and your stomach is not used to heavy digesting. Gradually take on solid foods, grazing on bananas, baked potatoes, that sorta food.

I would not work out strenuously, Definitely not the same routine as before the fast.

Set a mini goal, and enjoy the fast!

Walking. I walk every day if not every other day 2-2 1/2

i didnt know what fatsing was till right now when i looked it up. It explains how your sopposed to fast with only water, which seems dumb to me because then your gaining water weight and you'll always be bloated.

So, i guess it might work better with sugar free juices.

I've also read about this thing called the master cleanse that seems to be really good because it used lemon juice. & thats all you can drink for 14 days... you should look it up.

FAST-Rite is a dietary supplement specifically designed to assist in a healthy, effective fast. Fasting is often practiced as a form of detoxifying the body by eliminating all fatty or processed foods, refined sugars and bleached flour. Other fasts eliminate all foods for several days, but allow fruit and vegetable juices, while some allow only water. Some fasts are practiced simply to abstain from certain foods or lifestyles and are encouraged by churches and faith-based organizations.

Whatever the motivation to fast, the overall health of your body during and after the fast is of paramount importance. Fasting with inadequate levels of nutrients, vitamins and minerals in your system can be more harmful than beneficial to your body and defeat the whole purpose of the fast. FAST-Rite was formulated to provide a balance of foods and herbs, all found listed in the Bible and other scripture, to maintain good health. All the nutritional benefits come from natural sources.

FAST-Rite contains the following:

Wheat Bran-Nutritious grain with B Vitamins and minerals.

Bee Pollen –96 nutrients overall, a complete food and natural appetite suppressor.

Garlic-Support the immune system, fight bacteria, purify blood.

Olive Leaf-Naturally detoxifies, fights infection, enriches skin.

Milk Thistle- Liver protection.

White Willow-Anti-inflammatory, natural pain relief.

Flax Seed Oil-Lower triglycerides, reduce cholesterol and blood pressure.

Juniper Berry-Urinary tract support, lowers uric acid levels.

Nettle-Up to 40% protein, vitamin-rich, blood purifier and general tonic.

Aloe-Natural laxative effect, benefits skin.

Maintaining a strong immune system and supporting the organs utilized in waste elimination is important while fasting. The stress your system undergoes taxes the immune system and can make you more susceptible to infection. Since fastilng accelerates the elimination of toxins through the liver, colon, urinary tract and skin, these organs require additional nutritional support. And since the blood is active in transporting wastes, strong blood purifiers guard against an over-accumulation of wastes in the blood stream. High protein and nutrient rich foods give the digestive system something to process to reduce stomach discomfort and fatigue.

Fasting is a wonderful way to cleanse and balance the body, mind and spirit. If you are going to fast, FAST-Rite!

When you're working out, you shouldn't be fasting. You are supposed to supply your body with lots of healthy calories. I work out with a trainer and she never recommended about eating less, but rather carefully adjusting your diet. Your body isn't used to not consuming food so fasting may actually hurt you while working out.

you could fast like how a muslim fasts during fasting month. why? because research has said that it is healthy. it detoxes the insides if you don't eat until 6 PM. i'm not exaggerating or making this up just because i, myself, is a muslim. my non-muslim teacher back in high school told me this herself! for me, when i fast, i actually lose weight. i feel skinnier than i was before. so, why don't you try it out?

If you just stop eating all at once, you can do your body serious damage... possibly kill yourself (I almost died in HS because of this). Take your time limiting the amount of food you eat, and never completely stop eating. At the least, get down to a few snacks a day... your body NEEDS food. Fasting is actually good for you in moderation, so long as it is done in mediocrity.

Do not fast continuously, it would change your body's rate of metabolism and your body would actually start storing calories (in form of fat) and you would end-up perhaps more than your weight now. Fasting once / twice in a week is however a good idea.

If you reduce your consumption of empty calories(sugared sodas, chips, fries etc) and increase your exercise, you will lose weight. If you fast and exercise, your body goes into starvation mode and you basal metabolism goes down causing fat storage. Eat healthy and exercise is the only sure way to lose weight.

there are many ways of fasting. you will need to atleast eat a couple vegetables while you are doing it becuase your body cant just live off of juices and water. if you are lacking the right kinds of fats then your body will start eating itself to produce them and it can very dangerous. dont eat any red meat if you want to loose wieght and limit your self to 2000 calories a day. there are many ways to loose weight but dont use the pills they dont work and they are bad for your health.

You don't need to fast. Just take smaller portions of food when u eat. Use a smaller plate to put your food on. Then you think you have more food when u have less food. What ever you do don't stop eating. I hear the best way is to eat more meals but less portions.

Fasting is usually done for spiritual reasons not weight loss.

When people fast they are having a spiritual connection and this helps to go through it.

It would be safer to cut some things OUT of your diet and not fast all together. That is for weight lose. It sounds easy but it takes time and practice. I have fasted once a month since I was a kid for a few days only, it was for religious/spiritual reasons .

Your body actually goes into a mode of SURVIVING STARVATION, so what you have eaten will only be held on to longer and your food gets stored into fat. So you would be tricked into thinking you are FAT and want to fast more...while you would be depriving your body the nutrients it needs to be healthy.

A safe way to loose weight is to ask a doctor.

BUT not everyone has one of those.

Vitimins...

Water.

I simply cut out soda and junk foods with flour and sugar/glucose or anything with sugar in the first FIVE ingredients.

In May I started 2006 and I went from 210Lbs to 191Lbs. I also started to eat at least 3 small meals a day.

Your stomach shrinks.

Ever notice when you are sick and you don't eat, after a few days your stomach gets full faster? Well it shrinks. OUR stomachs are the size of our fists NORMALLY, we stretch them out when we over eat.

OR when we do not eat enough, Our bodies think we are starving and they hold on to anything longer.

I once met a man who was from a country some where in the mid-East...I forgot where now, but they have a 30 day fast. IT can be done safely. BUT those people do not go and work out.

As it was said limit your activities.

A mix or ready made solution called CAL MAG

is great for purifying yourself in such ways. It is CALCIUM AND MAGNESIUM some come in fruity flavors you can get it in a health store.

As you begin your fast, you may hear from concerned loved ones and friends who urge you to protect your health. And they are right. You should protect your health. But I assure you, if done properly, fasting will not only prove to be a spiritual blessing, but physical blessing as well.

By all means, consult your doctor before you begin your fast. But, be aware that many doctors have not been trained in this area and so their understanding is limited. Even so, it would be wise to ask your doctor for a physical exam to make sure you are in good health. You may have a physical problem that would make fasting unwise or dangerous. Also, if you are under any type of medication, make sure you talk to your doctor before changing your regime. Prudence and caution are in order.

When you are assured that you are in good health, you are ready to begin your fast. Follow the guidelines in the "Physical Preparations" and "Maintaining Nutritional Balance and Health" parts of this website.

In spite of the absolute safety and benefits of fasting, there are certain persons who should NEVER fast without professional supervision. For example:

Persons who are physically too thin or emaciated

Persons who are prone to anorexia, bulimia, or other behavioral disorders

Those who suffer weakness or anemia

Persons who have tumors, bleeding ulcers, cancer, blood diseases, or who have heart disease

Those who suffer chronic problems with kidneys, liver, lungs, heart, or other important organs

Individuals who take insulin for diabetes, or suffer any other blood sugar problem such as hyperglycemia

Women who are pregnant or nursing

NOTE!!!!!! VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!

SPECIALLY IN SUMMER!!! DO NOT STOP DRINKING WATER!!!!!!! DO NOT DEHYDRATE!!!!!!

You need a doctor's guidance. Strict fasting may not be a good thing for a long period of time, because the body will "cannibalize" itself for energy. One of our managers went on a very strict diet, and was tested for potential liver problems on a weekly basis by his physician.

2 weeks is too long to fast; it will be a lot of "water" weight and you'll lose muscle; drink plenty of veggy/fruit juices, water, broth, and a supplement, like ENSURE, once a day; plus multivitamin and an extra calcium supplement; drink something that will supply your body with much needed electrolytes balance.

A long time ago fasting was VERY VERY hard, but now it's very easy. Eat Bocca (Tofu/Veggie like) burgers(taste just like normal burgers) drink soymilk, eat vegetables, etc. and you can engage in all normal activites. It's almost too easy now to avoid meat and dairy for a while now and not suffer.

The best way to lose weight period is.. eat less calories then you burn.. thats it.. its really as simple as that.. you can look on websites and see how much it burns to run, swim or lifting.. then see how much calories are in the food you eat.. and if you can burn 2000 calories and u only ate 1800 every day.. you'll lose weight.. period..

fasting completely for 1 day is ok, and really limit your calories on the remaining week.

It should be ok to do this for two weeks, kinda jump start your diet.

But only do it if you are in good health.
Ryoga316
2006-07-13 13:46:11 UTC
You should fast only if you're not going to engage in any rigorous physical activity (workouts, running, lifting heavy objects, etc) during the course of the day. Doing so will greatly diminish your stamina, leaving you very fatigued because of the depletion of nutrients in your body. If you do need to undergo such activity, you are permitted to have some health foods like Fruits, Vegetables, and even some Gatorade to compensate. It's also important to take lots of water to avoid dehydration (you're allowed to take water, black coffee, or ordinary tea as much as you want during your fasting period as they all do not contain any calories).

When you finally get to eat, don't pig out as your body will not be able to adjust well and you could get health problems (this is evidenced in the case of the late Karen Carpenter, who tried to eat out too much to fight off her Anorexia problem). Have yourself a meal in moderate amounts (example: eat about a quarter or less of a full slab Steak along with 1/2 cup of rice or corn) and eat slowly. Eat with light meals that contain fiber, such as having Wheat Bread instead of Regular Bread, or Oatmeal instead of Pasta, so that you should stay full for a longer period of time during the fasting period. Though this is not neccessary (you can have yourself a Big Mac meal if you wish), eating light, healthier foods help you lose weight a little faster.

If for any reason, you must eat more than once of a full meal during the day of your fasting period, compensate with exercise and consuming 2 or more cloves of raw garlic. Garlic helps increase your metabolism and burning fat faster. If you worry about the side effect of gingivitis, you can saute the garlic in a pan for a minute before eating to reduce the smell.

When starting off, it's a good idea to have light snacks during your fasting period to allow time for your stomach to adjust. Feel free to have a small pack of crackers or vegetable sticks if you get hungry. Once you get used to it, reduce your consumption of snacks gradually until you have no longer of need of it.

As a short summary for a good fasting and providing the maximum effect, do the following:

- Eat once for the whole day

- When eating, eat only light/fiber rich meals or add garlic to your meal

- Avoid rigorous physical work (light work or exercise is ok)

- Drink lots of water or any other no-calorie drink to fight dehydration

- Snack with crackers or vegetable pieces and reduce them as you go

Good Luck with your fasting.

The word "fasting" itself is unhealthy, maybe you can "cut down" on your diet, not fast. Try to eat less, and cut down food in your diet gradually, because if you do it right away, you'll be at risk of hypoglycemia.

I asked myself the same question last year, but I sought wise council by useing the powers of observation with my family doctor. I noticed he had lost considerable weight (because he had to) so I asked him how he did it then accepted his advice knowing it was in my best interest to do so...It worked for me,and it will for you too. first. get a check up from your doctor

second get a good QUALITY multivitamin/mineral supplement

third drink juice, water, eat yogurt

people forget that food does more than taste good. it's the only way for the body to replenish itself with basic building blocks like calcium for building and repairng bone tissue, protein for maintaining muscle mass, carbs for energy, and thinking clearly....

If you're desperate, lower your calorie intake daily, instead of a 2,000 calorie a day diet, reduce it 1,000 but only eating fruits and drinking water, atleast it's not as bad as completely starving.

2006-07-13 21:51:18 UTC
you know, the monks used to brew a really dark beer and survive off of that while fasting... they still lost weight.. I don;t think it would really fly these days though to go on a beer diet...

Don't do it for weight loss. Anything temp like this is a fad and has short term results. This is very bad for your system.
anonymous
2006-07-14 03:55:36 UTC
Possibly, but most people that fast risk health problems.
anonymous
2006-07-13 16:14:07 UTC
No. You screw up your metabolism, and you will gain it all back and more. A low calorie diet (2,000 daily) with moderate excercise is the way to go. See a doctor (MD).

nothing is safe when your starving yourself, it may not effect you right now but it will later on. consult your doctor and he/she will show you a safe way to lose weight.

Yes. You would have to take vitamin pills to supplement all the things you will be missing by not eating food.

How about not even fasting? Starving yourself is never healthy.

Only fast if you have reason straight from heaven to do so. If God blesses it go ahead, he will strengthen you, if not... it's the same as anorexia.

Drink lots of water, & even fruit juices.

i would only fast when needed to.

if you were to work while fasting, then your body will have no"energy" and wont gain anything

so,to me,it sounds like a bad idea.

yes, there is a way to fast as long as you use common sense. (aka, lent.) just make sure that you still drink water and still get your main nutrients. just be sensible about it, and you'll be fine.

insted of just fasting, you should just eat fruit, and veggtibles for a few weeks. Its not healthy to just eat nothing.

im gonna say it clearly: fasting is wrong and should never be done! its dangerous and can lead to a bad case of anorexia. my suggestion is not to do it.

YES EVERY FAST IS SAFE BUT YOU FIRST NEED TO TRY THE THREE DAY FAST WHERE YOU JUST DO WATER AND CRAKERS OR EITHER YOU CAN DO WATER AND BREAD. YOU ALSO CAN DO THE FAST DAVID DID HE DID A FRUIT AND VEGATABLE FAST NO MEATS ONLY WATER FRUIT AND VEGATABLES. SOME DO THEIR FAST WHERE THEY EAT NOTHING AND DRINK NOTHING. IT IS NORMAL FOR YOU TO GET A HEAD ACHE YOUR BODY IS JUST DETOXIFYING WHICH MEANS IT IS CLEAING OUT AND YOU ARE STARTING A FRESH START. I FASTED FOR 40 DAYS I ATE BREAD OR CRAKERS AND DRANK NOTHING BUT WATER IT SEEMS HARD BUT ONCE YOU STAR SEEKING GOD IT IS AWESOME AND THE FAST WILL GO FASTER THEN WHAT IT MAY SEEM. I ENCOURAGE YOU TO PRAY AND ASK GOD TO LEAD YOU TO DO THE FAST HE FEEL IS RIGHT FOR YOU. SOME PEOPLE START AT 6 AM AND FINSH 3PM OR 6 PM SO YOU CAN DO EITHER BUT LIKE I SAID PRAY AND ASK GOD TO REVEAL TO YOU WHAT YOU NEED TO DO........ HE WILL GUIDE YOU AND SHOW YOU WHAT TO DO. GOD BLESS FEEL FREE AND EMAIL ME ANYTIME. PROPHETESSTAW@VERIZON.NET YOU ALSO FAST WHEN YOU ARE EXPECTING GOD TO DO SOMETHING IN YOUR LIFE IF YOU ARE EXPECTING HIM TO MAKE A POWERFUL MOVE N YOUR LIFE........

SINCERELY,
