Doing Yoga breathing exercise would rather shift you focus/attention from the road to your breathing which is unsafe.

While driving, I listen to soothing music rather than loud/noisy music.

Also I keep repeating to myself that some delay in reaching my destination is OK. My thoughts would be to drive patiently to reach my destination safely. This helps to keep my mind calm.

What a great idea. And maybe while doing Yoga you can put on make-up and talk on your cell phone as well.

If more people concentrate on driving we might have fewer accidents. Besides killing people, accidents create traffic jam as a side effect. Drive now, breathe later.

I keep my balance by avoiding rush hour traffic. If it still happens that I get caught in it I think of it as I'd think about the weather. This is something you can't control.

I've found Yoga to be a very Inner experience, which is great while I'm sitting on the floor. It's less great when I'm steering a two ton piece of rolling metal down an 11 foot wide lane. There is a time to be inwardly aware, and there are times to be outwardly aware.

To keep myself from stressing out, I prefer to sing. I can do that without losing awareness of my surroundings.

Yoga should be practiced while sitting in a calm and quiet environment. Some western people are commercializing yoga to make money and teach anybody and everybody with false promises.

When you drive your mind will not be at ease or peaceful. Yoga is to be practiced while you are in peace and requires concentration.

I don't do breathing exercises. I consciously don't get angry, but I find I get the most benefit from playing soothing or funny music to keep me in a cheerful and relaxed state of mind.

I don't do yoga breathing exercises while driving.

What I do do is focus on driving and not letting things distract me.

Yoga breathing exercises may be helpful before driving, not during.

How I keep MY balance....????....put some makeup on.....deep breath in......talk on my cell and close my eyes as I laugh..deep breath out........smoke in moderation (one at a time) and honk the hellllll out of my horn when others won't get out of my way........Hmmmm...these all sound like ways to cause accidents..

I perfer to turn my system up and sing along with some ACDC...Korn..disturbed..etc..etc.. and FOCUS ON DRIVING..

While driving I would under no circumstances do breathing exercises. My focus us on the road!

However, I be honest with you - while I normally enjoy more aggressive music, I have found a great classical station.

I travel a lot, since I mainly do inhome training. Sometimes I got the feeling I am about to fall asleep while driving.

If I'd think about something, or focus on something else but the road, I'd fall asleep with open eyes (Happened before).

I also noticed that 80's music brings my focus back and makes me feel refreshed, lol.

I do some yoga breathing while driving if I am sat at traffic lights waiting for them to change but not generally while I am driving. I will say one thing that I am not sure if it has been mentioned. If you do some breathing excercises while waiting at lights etc once you drive away your body has then started on the healing process so your efforts do not go to waste. Each time you come to another red light look beyond the light to what is going on around you, obviously minding that you are sat in traffic and appreciate other things rather than the fact you are sat at (yes another) red light.

It really won't hurt to take a few deep breaths breathing right down into your belly at each red light you are at for instance. You will notice that you become very centred and for myself I become more aware of the dangers around me. I think because you shut out outside influences and pay attention to your driving more (rather than what am I going to have for dinner, what I should have said to whoever etc) that you almost become better at the task in hand.

I hope this helps calming/happy music is great for driving to keep your mind in a light unstressed state to begin with.

Enjoy your rush hour driving

Being a classical musician and 'music therapist in training' I know that different kinds of music have different effects on the mind and body. If you listen to a piece in a minor key, it will have a depressive effect on your mood, but if you listen to a happy, upbead melody it will calm you down - especially in rush hour traffic. I do this daily and keep a ready supply of pieces in major keys. Some to keep an eye out for would be Mozart's "Magic Flute", any piano concerto from the classical era (or even baroque - think Bach) and even pieces by Dvorjak or Thaikovsky.

In the wintertime I love listening to the Nutcracker ballet. It's a great way to get into the spirit of the season and lift your mood.

Taking your focus off the road in traffic is not as bad as everyone else that has posted may think. It leads me to believe they have never been in REAL Southern California traffic (STOP and go). You have much room for breathing exercised, but just don't take it too far. Make sure your focus is always the road and only do the exercised when traffic is at a stand-still.

Listening to classical music is a great way to calm your nerves while not having to worry about "lost concentration".

Yes, breathing excercises is the best form of stress relieve even when U get into bed to sleep. Soon as U get into bed, U put yourself in a relaxed position & then start the breathing in & out momentum & within a short while U start to feel sleepy & soon doz off.

Each time I am on the road I talk to GOD & ASK for guidance to stay calm which is one way of staying calm. This helps so much in our daily lives

Most important of all soon as U get into the car is to sit yourself in a position that wont give u bad back pains, this way U can breadthe well with ease & not hunched over the steering column.

Then move at a pace where U will not annoy mad & impatient drivers left & right & behind U. Stay clear of any mad oncoming vehicle from behind your car.

Simple practice of this daily is good enough unless U are a hard core type & wont accept this method.

Stay away from muching. This is a bad habit while driving or at anytime other than meal time.

Yoga has many dimensions including meditation but two of them are most important:

1. Praanaayaam - various breathing exercise, like 'Bhasrika', 'Kapaalbhaati', 'Baahya' etc. [These are Sanskrit names, the language of Yoga]

2. Yogic exercises - forming various postures

The above two and the meditation give best results when performed in a calm and serene environment, however, breathing exercises (i.e. Praanaayaam) can be done almost any time any where. But there are limitations even in this, and since driving also requires concentration and body movements (legs, hands and neck to look behind), it is advisable to do, if necessary, only one type of breathing exercise explained below. [Yogic exercises, while, driving, are absolute no no].

"Kapaalbhaati" : This Praanaayaam can be done, while driving, in a limited way and will give only 50% of the beenefits which is done in a proper sitting posture. It is very simple to perform.

Just exale through NOSE in small bouts, (keep the mouth shut), approximately once every two seconds. Don't inhale. (It is not contradictory, air will automatically go in without your realizing and hence not required to inhale deliberately.)

In the process your stomach will go in (and come out automatically) like a diaphgram. This exercises your internal organs like, lungs, kidney, liver, prostate, uterus, pancreas etc. which generally do not get direct exercise.

As I said before this will give only about half of the benefit because your stomach is already pressed while driving, hence most internal organs may not get pressed as desired.

One word of caution though: while driving concentrate more on the road and AVOID doing any exercise, including 'Kapaalbhaati' and especially THE DEEP INHALE AND EXHALE.

let the breathing become automatic, which is why breathing should be essentially practiced during periods set aside for that. Especially when driving and your complete attention to what is going on around you, you should not fool around with breathing exercises or music or other mental activities that distract you from the serious nature of driving when lack of attention could result in serious damage or even death. A lot of breathing exercises could cause you some level of disorientation, as well. There is a time and place for everything. Your body and your mind know that, so practice during your practice periods and keep a mind to breathe normally but fully while you are attending to your activities.

During driving a motor vehicle, there is no specific yoga to be advised other than keep the body straight so as the spinal code is straight. Straightness of spinal lessen all kinds of stresses, which is not known to many. Sitting also in a cushion bed is not advised for strainless drive. Driver's seat should be hard that does not harm the physical fitness. Driving with care of these two points is the only advisable, since driving a vehicle needs various positions of the body and respiratory adjustments, this is not only advisable for driving but every work by sitting somewhere including office works.

I lived in Dallas and Houston, TX. I figured out it was better to just go some where and sit out the rush hour until the traffic cleared. I used to just stop at a park, or do some shopping. I would get home at the same time normally and didn't waist all of my fuel sitting and stirring about. It would take 11/2 hours-2 hours to commute a 20 minute drive at rush hour.

YOGA starts with breathing and thus improving your oxygen intake which makes you feel ALIVE and healthy.

I have tried this a while ago and it gives you a lot of relief. Please ensure that you do not get carried away with the excercise that you forget the traffic and block the road.

Initially you will have to concentrate on your breathing tchnique, gradually in a few days this will become a natural habit. You may also do this at work.

Observe your natural breath. You will notice that as you inhale the abdomen rises and then falls with exhalation. Watch this for a few moments to check this flow. Now begin to deepen, lengthen and extend that movement. That is, while inhaling, let the abdomen rise to its limit and at exhalation let it fall completely. Keep the chest still during this entire process – only move the abdomen. Continue this for 20 breaths and then rest

Now to the second phase; If you still stuck in traffic...

Observe your normal breath, this time focusing your attention on the chest. You will notice the chest moving slightly up at inhalation and down with exhalation. Again observe this pattern for a few moments. Now again, begin to deepen, lengthen and extend that movement. This time, on inhalation expand and lift the rib cage, filling the lungs completely. Then on exhalation, let the lungs collapse fully, sinking to the limits. In this step, keep the abdomen still, moving only the chest. Do this for 20 breath cycles and then stop

GOLDEN RULE: All of the above steps should be done WITHOUT strain. The natural tendency is to heave with effort. The right way is to make it smooth and effortless. Go slow and easy.

Oh wow! I do exactly those three thing....that's really creepy. But anyways, every morning, i have a cup or two of green tea and plenty of water. I listen to a nice relaxing song or two and sometimes stretch a bit. Since i'm stiff from sleeping and all. While doing this stretching, i sometimes "meditate". More so just sitting down, with some soothing ocean sounds, and focus on my goals for the day and breathing exercises! This is my daily regime,,,,i wake up early so i can do things at a slow pace. Hope this answers your questions!

I take long slow breaths to the count of about 10, then a long slow exhale to the same rhythm. I am not a person who does well driving in traffic. In fact, a trip to the airport before trying the yoga breathing technique felt more like a 2 hour long anxiety attack. By doing the yoga style breathing, I can make the drive OK.

I don't do any breathing exercises, and I honestly think if I breathe in and out too much, I could pass out behind the wheel and become a danger to all the other motorists on the road, not to mention myself. The best way to relax during the commute is to listen to your favorite songs and sing to them. Or listen to a radio station that plays soft music to help you relax. Let your mind wander a little when you are in bumper to bumper traffic, but still keep your eyes on the road. Hope this helps!

Personally I wouldn't recommend doing any relaxation breathing exercises behind the wheel of a vehicle!

You don't want to relax *that* much! Driving requires all the concentration you can muster.

When I find myself in a traffic jam, I read a small article, sing along with the radio, make a quick call (NOT while the car's moving!), etc.

Again: Doing breathing exercise to help you relax while you're driving isn't a good idea. It tells your brain to slow down and you literally will...

Think I'm full of it, ask around.

While driving the parts stressed are 1. FINGERS 2.LEGS 3.BACK 4. NECK 5 EYES 6 HANDS 7 EARS 8 LEG JOINTS LETS DEAL WITH ONE BY ONE 1. Fingers. when u stop at signals for about 40 to 50 seconds realising fingers from steering just close it and open thall 10 fingers or keep them around ahot tea mug so that it will get refeshed 2. legs. try to strech out and when ther is no traffic in long drive keeping just above away from normal posture as well near the brake ( because u cant say when u need that leg to apply brakes) and keeping pain relieving spray near or in dash board and massaging the joints by the free hand holding the other on the steeringand similartechnics for other parts also

. F inally before driving tell yourself i will be alert today while driving and nothing untoward will happen and think pof GOD that he will guide me and save from all critical junctures

The power of enhanced deep breaths is amazing. When we were children and we had a crying "attack", the first thing our parent(s) told us was to calm down by taking in a deep breath. From there, we see this really does work. Over the years, we then ignore this truth of what to do when we are in a panic, stressful situation, or anything that caused tension.

I personally breathe deeply as I have some calming music. It works. Other things that I have seen in rush hour traffic was someone calming their nerves by blowing bubbles in their car!!! As cute as it looked, it put a smile on my face while I was in the middle of my breathing!!!!

Hope this helps. Great question indeed!!!

I think if You are stuck in Traffic , the Yoga Aasan you can do is TAKE LONG BREATH In And Out .....!

Well it is Very Common as a Lots of People have already told About it.....but I would add While you take the LONG BREATH in COUNT 1, 2 ,3 up to 10 ,...in this way if you are feeling a bit angry and stressed you will feel a bit relief........

Commuting can be heck... the only thing that we can really control is our own self. I find that creating a peaceful environment in my vehicle makes any commute better. Gospel music, or inspirational music in the morning, a clean good smelling vehicle is always refreshing. Aromatherapy is a great treatment for stress, try an energizing fragrance to help keep you alert, and one of my favorite is to leave early. When I am not concerned about being late traffic has no effect on me. Leave earlier, create a enjoyable environment, and enjoy the ride.

Take yoga breathing in 3 steps. You CAN mantain focus on the road and on breathing. You are not meditating.

3 basic parts of deep breathing:

1.Abdominal

2.Rib Cage

3.Upper chest

Try this a few times before driving so you know how it should feel and that you're doing it correctly. This way you can concentrate on driving and the breathing will come easier.

Place your hand on your abdomen. Breath in slowly and make sure to feel your abdomen expand, to a count of say 3. Then place your hand on your rib cage, in the same breath expand the rib cage to a count of 3. Then upper chest (around the sternum area) inhale (same breath) to inflate this area to a count of 3.

All these should be done in one breath, slowly. Ab, rib, sternum.

Then exhale the same way- 3 count top to bottom (sternum, rib, ab).

After you do this breathing once breath normally 3 times.

Repeat the entire technique 3 times. You can increase the numbers as you wish but 3 count is a good place to start. Sometimes a person may become light headed because you're taking in more air than we normally do so see how it affects you before you drive. Keep all the counts the same. If you use 3, use 3 for all the counts.

It's yoga breathing (calming) but not meditative so it is safe while driving.

Many yoga breathing techniques involve closing one nostril or another, which wouldn't be suggested while driving since you need both hands to drive! Two suggestions though:

1) Deep-belly breathing. Most of our breath during the day is VERY shallow. Try to inhale all the way down to your diaphram and stomach. Don't force or manipulate your breath by trying to inhale more air than is comfortable or hold it for longer than feels normal, just let it come naturally while being mindful of taking a 'full' breath.

2) Try a form of what I'll call "breath chanting." It's when, on an inhale, you say something to yourself (either out loud or just think it) like, "breathing in, I calm my body." Then on the exhale say, "breathing out, I smile." Or anything that works for you. This is particularly helpful for me if I am stuck in traffic. It helps slow the mind and bring you back to the present, and keeps you from wanting to plow down the person who cut you off :) You might also try something like, "breathing in, I am aware of tension in my body; breathing out, I release that tension." after a few inhales and out hales of the whole sentence, you might shorten it to (inhale) "aware of tension," (exhale) "release the tension." Or maybe even just "aware" and "release." Have fun with those and create a chant that works for you in the moment.

I enjoy driving anyway. If there is a traffic jam, I just relax and listen to music more attentively. If I am in a rush to get someplace, I may exit and find an alternative route to get there! If I am on my way to work, I will mentally check off what needs to be looked into and how to prepare for the day's plan, will use the cell phone and start my job from the car!

Breathing exercise needs one hand free. If you can do so, you may practice a good breathing exercise. Beware safety is more important than yoga!

The procedure: press right nostril, breath out slowly from the left nostril until lungs are fully evacuated then take slow and deep breath in filling lungs fully. Hold it. Now release right nostril and press left nostril. Start releasing air from right nostril. Repeat the process that was followed for the other nostril. Keep doing as many time as you can.

While I am driving through rush hour I always have an iced tea. Always an herbal tea, of course. I never use coffee to relieve stress! Also, if you want to practice a deep breathing exercise, start your breath from your stomach and carry it to your nose to exhale. Try listening to an "easy listening" song like "Breathe" by Anna Nalick. It always helps. I am not big on those sounds of nature C.D.'s. Hope this helps you out!

Sitali breath is the best as that is the cooling breath. You need to curl your tongue, stick it out a bit and breath. The problem with Kalabhati as others have suggested is that it excites you, sets you on fire.

I don't know about you, but if I am stuck in traffic, I don't need to be any more excitable. I prefer nice calm mentality. Sitali breath is also good for cooling yourself off on a hot day when the a/c just won't cut it or it's not available.

I agree with calming music or books on CD's to take your focus off. I live amist the worst part of I-95 and have learned all these techniques over time.

Also water is good to clean toxins out of your body, but also just to quench your thirst. Thirstiness can lead to agression too.

I don't recommend doing any deep breathing exercises while driving as they affect the central nervous system. In the morning it is best to leave the radio off if your looking for a calming effect, that will give time to think and reflect on the day ahead of you, and your cortisol levels are higher in the morning so listening to loud noisy music will only increase your stress. You should however practice your breathing in a nice quiet place free of distractions.

I don't get stressed out while driving

even all day, even if traffic doesn't move

music helps, also, in a car you can control the temp, if the heat and ac are working

also, just the meditation of stearing and watchiung the road acn be very relaxing

when I did field service driving was the restful part of the job, so it still relaxes me, even driving to Florida or something

Driving is a reflex activity. Certain systems should be alert and aware during driving, i.e., fear. It is good to recognize fear because fear also creates an inner reflex to defensive driving.

If you want to relax while driving try any of the following or combine one or two together:

1. Listen to nature sounds like dolphins, whales, rain, or an ocean rather than instrumental sounds. Nature has a way of naturally relaxing therefore you will be able to relax with the sounds of nature so long as you enjoy the sounds.

2. Pull over once every hour for about ten minutes. Get out of the car and walk around, or have a bottle of liquid bubbles and blow bubbles into the air. The sensation of watching the bubbles float is relaxing and it monitors your breathing so your breathing is calm and relaxed.

3. Keep sounds down low, loud noises initiate stress and anxiety; also you need to be aware of the other guy. Remember it is the other guy that you have to second guess and alertness is awareness.

4. Don't smoke in the car. Pull over for your ciggarette.

5. Wear driving shoes, something comfortable but not the heavy street shoes or sandles.

6. If you have a hypnotherapist, ask for a relaxation trigger that you may use when feeling stressed. Your trigger will be wonderful at that time of stress.

7. Do not ask for hypnotherapy to overcome fear of driving because fear is self-respect in that instance. Fear is a wonderful emotion when directed accordingly, otherwise it is negative and harmful.

8. Kennel your pets. Do not drive with a pet in the seat because in the smallest of shake ups the pet may leap to your lap. You could lose control while trying to manage the pet.

9. Strap the children into their safety seats and/or seat belts and do not converse with the children while driving. Allow the children to use their music headsets or toys and games to pre-occupy themselves.

10. Do not answer the phone if you do not know who it is or what it may be about. Return the call unless you know the caller and the purpose, for example don't answer a babysitter's call when you are driving. Why would a baby sitter call except to talk about something not relaxing? If you are in NY you can't use the cell at all.

11. Use soft, pleasant scents in your car. Avoid harsh or strong aromas or scents. Use linen, lavendar, soft mixes of herbals.

12. If you really stress out, try taking one lowest dose available of Ashwaganda (an Indian Ayurvedic mild tranquilizer) it is the mildest tranquilizer over the counter you can take that should not impair your driving (but try them before you drive to make sure of your own chemical reactions)

13. Don't drink alcohol and avoid caffeine when driving.

14. Minimize the sugar intake.

15. Breath in thinking, "I am calm" breath out slowly thinking, "I am relaxed." Remain calm and relaxed. Hope this helps.

deep breathing, find yourself a radio station that plays something that would be calming and soothing for you and just sit tall and focus, breath in deeply and breath out. keeping an eye on how the traffic is around you of course but don't let it allow you to be stressed. If there is nothing on the radio maybe you might want to invest in some tapes or cds that are calming for you. But find a stress reliver and it will help you live a happier life, you will get where you are going in a better mood.

Space. Each person has a certain amount of personal space around themselves. Looking out through a window gives the impression of having more space. Having a roof and mirror right next to your face cuts into that illusion, and often creates greater stress without the driver realizing it.

Change the design radically. Within the visual area, the main focal area, open it up, visually. Retractable rather than fold-able sun shields, a mirror without frame, built into the window, a taller front window.

I hope I didn't go completely outside your question. I don't have a huge personal space. I think of how I love life and that usually does it.

Breath to relax while driving is advisable, by taking deep breath inside slowly thru nostrils then throwing it out thru your mouth slowly (by contracting your anus & lower to upper abdomen*) . Another method is to observe your breath it should not be too fast and observe your mind and stop it from unnecessary thinking or think contrary thoughts and live in this moment only with awareness and keep it cool meaning that breathing in controlled way can control your thoughts or controlling thoughts can controll your breath because breathing and thinkig has very close relationship so controlled breathing and thinking would keep mind under control and stress at lower level of any hour. But yoga breathingexercises are not advisible in air conditioned packed room or box. Any kind of breathing exexrcise should be done only in open and airy environment.

*this should be done wih empty stomach or at least after two hour after food

I like to do a full 2, second breathe in, followed by a 2 second breathe out . Breathe through the nostrils. I also tell myself that the only person who can stress me out is myself, and that I don't have to stress about anything if I don't want to.

Be very careful, cause these breathing techniques are very powerful and can cause you to lose focus towards the task at hand (not getting in an accident).

I have improvised breathing maneuvers that are similar to what I was taught in Lamaze classes as well as yoga. I do them while driving.

On those long road trips when I have frequently heard "are we there yet?" from my 2 sons, I improvised breathing contests. In those, we compete to see who can do the longest exhale. During the exhale, some type of silly noise is made (i.e., beep beep beep), sometimes we measure the breath by the number of times that the noise is made. It seems that the harder that they try, the more mellow that they get in this activity.

Sometimes I pray the rosary as I drive, I find that to be inspiring and relaxing.

Yoga is more about concentration & control over your breathing process.I would not suggest to practice yoga while you are driving because it will shift your focus and you might get lost in your own breathing process which can potentially affect your driving abilities.Rather i would say that if you practice yoga regularly you wouldnt need to do that for a particular situation as it automatically comes in you.Yoga makes you relaxed & energetic and while going through stressful conditions your insight already knows what to do may be without you realising this.So better practice yoga regularly!

Well I'm not familiar with any yoga breathing excercises but when I'm at the wheel and feel like I'm stressed from being in traffic or what not, I just breathe in deeply and let out slowly to calm myeslf. Sometimes I just close my eyes for a second and re-open them slowly while breathing.

During my last job, where my commute was an hour and a half each way, I discovered Harry Potter on audiobook. Jim Dale's voice made me forget that I was on my way to and from a really crappy job in a city far away. The commute became the best part of the whole day!

I hope you mean when you're stuck in a traffic jam and not actually driving the car! Driving well and safely takes 101% of one's concentration - ie. constant attention -and any activity will deminish your attention. But to try to answer your question, when you are stuck, there are many neck, arm and shoulder excercises that I do along with some deep breathing that helps with stuck or when I can get out and stretch. But even the deep breathing can get one a bit dizzy.

Breathing in and out deeply but at the same time trying to feel your shoulder blades expand outwards as you breath in and trying to breath in down to your hara(approximately the navel area.

Do this breathing in and on breathing out try to let go as in remove all mental effort from it.

.

When driving we tend to tens the belly a bit and in general we squeeze in the shoulders on a constant level closig off our sacral and heart energies.

Slowly try to develop this so it doesnt take away your concentration from driving.

Forgive yourself completely for not being any good at this at the start because you must stay alive at the wheel and so should the people you are around.

Start with the deep belly breath and then as you get better incorporate trying to open the thorax which sould spread the shoulder blades. This should over time increase your awareness when driving and reduce the effect of road rage.

I like to take a deep breathe in and imagine the sound of the ocean on my exhale a flower meadow a top a mountain. Also, I have a cd with great instrumentals that mellows me out, oh a a Starbucks Green tea frap, it always on hand! If none of that works then it goes on to plan B and you don't want to know about plan B cuz it ain't pretty!

Do you mean while driving or while waiting for signal? In any case, breathing exercise is pretty simple and if done properly can help one rejuvenate one's health!

For breathing exercise what you need to do is use your left thumb to press the left nostril and as you do breathe in using the other nostril. Then use the middle finger to press your right nostril and release air through the left nostril. Then, inhale through the other nostril and follow the process.

By the way, bear in mind, while driving the focus should be on the road ahead and driving!

always green tea in the cup holder or peppermint.

when someone is driving erratically and I am stuck in the spot in back with no chance of getting off the road- deep breathing helps- and making faces- the more contorted the better.

to soften the effects of a long boring commute nothing beats hip hop or rap music - I have worn out the left hand side of the carpet where my "non driving " foot goes.

Basically, a simple breathing technic, which is called breathing observation with diagphram focus, relaxed shoulder, limbs include relaxed toes and elbows, and fingers. Advanced breathing , if the weather around is cold then ujayyi can be done. But if the weather is hot then sitali can be done. Those are while driving. But while waiting in the traffic hour and traffic jam more than 30 minutes, then a set of breathing can be done:assume that the car has an Air conditioning. So, start with ujayyi, 10 rounds ( snorring breathing, nose to nose), then balance and calming with alternate nostril breathing, close one nostril to inhale and exhale another nostril and inhale with the same nostril ( considered to be one round), ten times as well. Then cooling with breathing through left nostril breathing, or heating with the right nostril breathing ( depends on the person needs, if feels lazy, then better heating). Then closed with ohm chanting or bee breathing.

But if totally not experience with yoga breathing techniques, return to technic one: observe the breathing only.

I used to have major road rage issues, especially when someone cut me off, tailgated me, etc. However, I've now realized that the only person that was hurting was ME! So, I've begun trying to breathe more easily and evenly in sticky traffic situations. When someone cuts me off, I automatically calm myself, and realize that I've probably done it before, too. I've also found that listenting to books on cd help a lot, also. Staying off the cell phone, and listening to a book, is a great way for me to drive stress-free.

I also always try to remember that I am not a perfect driver! I'm sure I've made other people angry before, and it's not going to help anyone by being rude.

Why are you all so stressed driving that you need to perform these relaxing yoga breathing exercises?

Just concentrate and have some empathy for other drivers...they might have a brand new baby on the back seat, or taking sick dog to the vet..or whoa

careful...they could be practising their yoga :o/

I dont think doing breathing exercises while drvining is a good idea because both driving and breathing exercises need to be done with concentration.

There are soem breathing exercises which need to be done with empty stomach. If done after having any of the meals, they can have a choking effect. So doing exercises while breathing isn't something i would recommend.

Listening to soothing music, as some ppl suggested, is a good idea. Or if u can have someone else drive the car then u can do some breathing (those which do not involve stomach) and neck exercises in the passenger's seat.

yoga breathing is very helpful, healthy and relaxing... BUT while engaging in any yoga "exercise" the proper technique is to concentrate/ focus ONLY on that exercise..i've always "preached" while driving one should take the yoga approach and ONLY focus on driving... if everyone lived in the moment, focusing only on what they were doing at a specific instance [ as in yoga], there would be NO, [ ZERO] traffic accidents accept for mechanical failures.. SO i would have to say NO breathing exercises should be practiced while driving ... maybe prepare yourself with a calming exercise BEFORE you get behind the wheel then focus on the task at hand.....

There is nothing good to do that will not distract you. All focus needs to be on driving.... True, I now and then, give a look over and see if there is a skirt with beautiful legs attached ...could cause accident.

Deep breathing is not advised ....being an employee of a gas detection company I know that auto fumes could be in concentration out there in the traffic lanes.

Be careful.

well i don't really take yoga but love doing the exercises.one of the main breathing exercises i do while driving is the semanethic breathing exercise, known as( ice-cream).i know that sounds weird but its helpful.and its when every time you stop at a red light you take a deep breath in and say ice then exhale cream.you do this until the light turns.or you don't have to do it while driving you can do it a home or anywhere to relieve all that stress.if you don't understand you can IM me on my profile.I hope this helps. Yoga breathing exercises that emphasize concentration, endurance, flexibility and stretching. The philosophy is that the breath, the mind and the body are so closely linked that whatever you do to one will affect the other. It's believed that correct breathing alone can relax your entire body, rid it of unwanted toxins and rid your mind of anger, stress, tension and worry. To make a person tension free and stress free breathing exercise is very important

Yoga exercises are wonderful, if you keep in your seat, and so are Kegel exercises, as they are not visible to the driver beside you. That is a method of ensuring your strengthening the muscles around your bladder, so as you get older, or bear children, or have, you can help these muscles regain their ability to give you the nod that you need to get out of your car to go!!!

Personally, I look around, and smile at some of the stressed out drivers around me. There is a wonderful poem or saying which AA members and others know: "Change what you can, accept what you cannot. (as in this case) and know the difference." I'm pretty sure many A-type personalities do real harm to themselves from festering when driving, and a radio can play whatever you love, or CD, etc. so if you have a special way to relax when you can relax, put that to work when faced with this situation.

I talk on the phone. safely, I have a blue tooth, and I call my family while commuting. My mom, sister, daughters who are away for the summer, or my friends. So when idiots pull over without blinking, and have no remorse, I may get upset, but I just get back into happy conversing with people I love. It really helps, because I used to speed by rude and awful drivers and yell and let it affect my day. Now, hearing my 1 yr old niece on the phone, attempting to form words, just kind of allows me to shrug off bad drivers. And the blue tooth, love it, keeps both hands on the wheel and no music playing, so I concentrate on the road, and it's voice activated, so no hands are needed to dial. I am one with the road.

I've noticed that a lot of people are now reading the newspaper and having coffee.....while driving down the highway at 80 miles per hour. Perhaps some of them could also use this deep breathing idea. I've heard it lowers stress. Could even bring your heart to a stop...after the car crashes.

Since I have been practicing hatha yoga all my adult life I could not really tell you how it would be if I did not at certain points while driving practice pranayama. Perhaps I would allow myself to become absorbed by some of the more desequilibrated sentiments and who knows, end it all in some form of extenuated and displaced neurosis, and then displace and transfer it all to some innocent victim.

Pranayama gets oxygen to the brain and helps clean out some of the toxins acquired and causing discomfort in some way that can reflect on your driving ability.

take a deep breath with count 1 to 5 and store it in your lungs till count 5 to 10 and then release it out from count 10 to 15 repeat this for couple of time. Other exercise is move your head to extreme left and then to extreme right do this for 5 times and then you will be relaxed and your driving will be more comfortable.

I would not do anything that takes away from your focus on the road. Slow deep breathing may be good to use at home or if stessed out when you are stopped and stuck but consciously connected breathing of any sort will take away your outward concentration and invert it inwards and this is another reason as to why and how it relaxes you as well. Driving requires intense concentration in the best of times and you should not be encouraging people to try these tactics during such responsible situation where it alters their conscious levels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The breathing exercises, under certain conditions, can remove one entirely from physical into higher consciousness, so NEVER, NEVER do LY breaths before and/or during any hazardous operation such as driving a car, climbing a ladder or crossing a street or in public view

Get comfortable in your car seat. Relax. Breathe normally. Now exhale forcefully and then begin to inhale deeply. When the lungs are really full, exhale through your nose slowly. Help this exhalation by contracting your stomach muscles. Let the stomach relax completely as the air begins to come back in through your nose. Then get a rhythm of your breathing.

I would suggest that you just be mindful of not holding your breath when you're stressed. Just remind yourself to breathe, normally. Yoga breathing can be too relaxing and take your mind off your driving. Please, take my word for it, it is dangerous. I did it one time and almost fell asleep at the wheel because I became too inwardly focused and relaxed. You need to be able to maintain a state of calm alertness when you drive, not inward-focused disengagement which yoga breathing promotes. My suggestion: Give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination and listen to some good music or a favorite talk show on the radio.

I wouldnt suggest any exercises while driving... listen to some soft soothing music or music of your choice... that is def relaxing. And if you really want to do breathing exercises, if you are stuck in a traffic jam, then breath in and out slowly and be concious of your breathing... follow the air going in and out.

we call it "shifting." It's what you do when you actually know how to drive your car and don't rely on a Stupo-matic transmission, which is so lazy and so not yoga and not cool at all. If you know how your drive train works and are listening to the clues that your engine sends you (this little bugger will BEG you to shift, when the moment is right!), there is no better zen in the world. If you don't know how to listen to this, you should probably hunt down a yak pronto and forget the challenge of driving, period. Hope your chosen bovine likes green tea! Mine prefers regular unleaded.

In addition to deep breathing, try to concentrate and solve problems mentally that are ahead during the day. While deep breathing helps the left brain to get more Oxygen and activates better thinking, the right brain, if properly activated with proper thinking, will result in Innovative thoughts.

You need to get a driver first! Then you can concentrate on doing something else. Not bad enough you have cell phones and navigation systems, TV's and video players in cars, now we have people doing Yoga?

How about paying attention to the road. If you don't you and your deep breathing yoga will be causing rubbernecks on the freeway after you have that accident.

2007-06-29 08:20:13 UTC
Well, I'm not sure if it's yoga-specific, but one thing that helps me focus on my driving while at the same time calming me is to exhale slowly while simultaneously casting my awareness not only out to the road before me, but also peripherally. Not only does this seem to help me exhale "properly" and effectively, but the calming affect furthers my awareness of what's going on around me on the road. Let the inhale come naturally, and it doesn't have to be a long inhale, and then do another extended exhale (nothing forceful, just slow and steady) while once again training my awareness on everything in not only my direct vision, but also peripherally. The usual glances in the rear- and side-view mirrors should be continued as well as part of keeping up with what's going on around you. It causes this not-so-vicious cycle where the calming nature of the breathing routine enhances your awareness of what's going on on the road, while being continuously aware of what's happening around you on the road enhances proper exhalation for better relaxation ... and without wanting to fall asleep of course! :) Hope this helps. (Heck, I'm hoping that it makes any sense to begin with, lol!)

Not bad enough you idiots are on cell phone with your minds wandering, now we are going to promote deep breathing Yoga exercises while driving? So your navigation system isn't enough of a distraction with your Video player showing the kids movies, now you are going to talk on the phone and do yoga?

What advise do you have for someone that has to drive from state to state w/ traffic everyday? (moving w/i a year). Yoga, breathing, radio, cd, nothing helps.

My personally suggestion is make one lane for all those that have no idea where they are going, haven't updated to ezpass, like to read, write, eat, put on make-up, talk or argue on their cell phones, etc while driving and causing accidents. Keep all the other lanes for those who work hard all day and want to get home asap, have ezpass, know where they are going, and emergency vehicles.

when stuck in non moving traffic you can do a Hatha Yoga mediation where you open you eyes fully and slowly trace a line with your eyes from the top and bottom of you sight. After a minute or so of this you do the same tracing left and right, then a clockwise circle, followed by a counter clockwise circle. At the end rub your palms together to create warmth and place them over your closed eyes. This relaxes and rejuvenates your as, as well as calming you. You can shorten each step to only a few seconds depending on just how slow traffic is going.

Whenever you are finished with your breathing exercise, you will normally feel a little bit dizzy.....and this is something that we don't want happening while driving........so, yoga and driving do not go together at all......I would also encourage you to allot sometime daily for yoga(mornings better) and by the schedule.

In traffic, you are in extremely polluted air. It is not a good time to do breathing exercises. Besides, yoga brings inward attention and in traffic you need to focus on the road. If you are the passenger, you could do your favorite meditation.

Alternate-nostril breathing

(Also called Nadi Shodhana, this technique is believed to balance the left and right sides of the brain and ease tension.)

Blow your nose, if necessary. Sit comfortably, with the back straight.

Gently press the right nostril shut with the right thumb.

Exhale through the left nostril, then inhale through the left nostril.

Open the right nostril.

Press the left nostril shut with the right ring finger.

Exhale through the right nostril, then inhale through the right nostril.

Repeat as needed.

First, just be aware of your inhalations and exhalations without trying to control them. Then, count how long your inhalations are and make sure your exhalations are at least as long as your inhalations. This helps bring balance. Then, try to make your exhalations twice as long as your inhalations. This will be calming and relaxing. Don't do it for more than five minutes or so. This type of breathing exercise, or pranayama, is one of the eigt limbs of yoga.

Here is something to do during anybody movement...

Since this is driving.....which is not a lot of movement...So allow me to pick ...running....In doing so....A mental picture

of your distance,and Destination.....Feel your legs...time this.

Pick the count you choose and hold your breath for that count and slowly release. During TV commericals,cleaning,...Just

pick something where the body MUST move and count an activity and hold your breath while performing a task. Tai-Chi.

This is also heard that it helps the muscle relax faster. BUT REMEMBER.... EYES ON THE ROAD.

you imagine your head being pulled up by a string - you relax the shoulders - you relax the shoulders a second time - you tuck in the hips slightly to take the curve out from the lower back - you then sink the breath. think of three fingers below the belly button. when you inhale through the nose, this area expands. when you exhale through the mouth, this area contracts back.

Rhythmic breathing is very effective at calming, relieving stress, and focusing the mind.

Breathe in on a count of 6

Lightly hold for a count of 3

Breathe out for a count of 6

Lightly hold for a count of 3.

These should be complete, deep breaths filling both the upper chest and abdomen (deep diaphragm.)

Avoid compressing the breath or kundalini exercises while driving, as these can make you lightheaded or dizzy.

In general, kundalini should be avioded unless you have extensively cleansed your system and chakras.

In Boston, our yoga consists of a few exercises.

1. Pressing the palm of your hand against the center of your steering wheel, helps clear pathways otherwise unseen.

2. Curl your hand into a fist and extend the middle finger, hold at head height pointing upwards away from the body. This creates acquaintances otherwise unknown.

I personally pray to God. I believe in His divine help and ask Him to give me patience and to be calm. I mean face it, driving on the road today can be hazardous to your health as others vent their road rage out on you.

Having classical music on, or some other type of feel-good tunes, has been scientifically proven to relax people. Listen to an audio book, perhaps. Avoid caffeinated drinks as they will make you easily irritable. Have water on hand and something that's easy to snack on.

On longer commutes I will put some ice cubes with a wash cloth into a plastic bag. Before my trip back I take out the wash cloth, which is quite cooled then, and wipe my face with it before driving. It's very invigorating.

While driving one can do just simple breathing exercise like

Take air inward with counting one, two, three, four keep breath insde for one two three four and get out the breath while counting one, two, three, and four

(The time may be 4-4-4 seconds while inward-inside-outward) or in similar nature

You can use either the triangular breathing pattern (inhale for a count of 7, hold for a count of 7, exhale for a count of 7) or the more advanced square brething pattern (inhale for a count of 7, hold for a count of 7, exhale for a count of 7, hold for a count of 7). Both of these patterns are simple, safe, and are very soothing to the mind and mood. You can lower or add to the count as necessary.

I sing really loud/ at the top of my lungs ( with windows up.. of course)

When stopped in traffic I do my kegel's or crunch in my abdominal muscles and hold it until the traffic moves or light changes

I take deep stomach breaths in thru the nose and slowly let it out thru pursed lips

Music is okay if it doesn't make you lose focus of the road...

Breathing exercises take your mind OFF of the road and ONTO your own breathing, so HECK NO!!

But come on.... A CUP OF GREEN TEA? Please do me a favor and stay off of the road when I'm driving...I'd like to KEEP my life, thank you...

Don't do breathing exercises while driving.

When I stop at stoplights where I know I will be there awhile, I take several deep breaths, tilt my head to the left, trying to reach my shoulder and hold for about 12 seconds, tilt back up, take another deep breath and then tilt my head to the right, trying to reach my shoulder and hold for about 12 seconds. I repeat if I can.

No Yoga breathing is help full while driving since any pranayam one wants to practice barely requires empty stomach and closed eye concentration. Driving is also a karma which needs full concentration while doing it.

Space. Each person has a certain amount of personal space around themselves. Looking out through a window gives the impression of having more space. Having a roof and mirror right next to your face cuts into that illusion, and often creates greater stress without the driver realizing it.

Well, I don't know if this is helpful, but what I do when I'm driving with my mom or dad, I just look out the window, or if I am with my cousin, to make it fun. We wave at people and see how many we can get to wave back.

I PRACTICE MORE PILATE'S THEN YOGA BUT NOT WHILE DRIVING. I FOUND MYSELF JUST SITTING STRAIGHT IN PROPER POSTURE IS LESS STRESSING ON YOUR BODY WHILE DRIVING.

i AGREE WITH A FEW DEEP BREATHING AND SOOTHING MUSIC MAY TAKE YOUR CONCENTRATION FROM THE ROAD, BUT THIS IS ONLY IF THE PERSON BECOMES ENTIRELY TO RELAXED TO WERE THEY START FALLING A SLEEP.

A SIDE FROM THAT I DON'T THINK ITS A BAD IDEA TO PRACTICE BREATHING TECHNIQUES FOR A FEW SECONDS NOT MINUTES AND MINUTES OF DRIVING.

JUST REMEMBERING THAT YOU MIGHT BE LATE TO YOUR POINT B BUT ITS BETTER LATE THEN NEVER ARRIVING IF YOU ARE FOUND IN A DEADLY ACCIDENT ALL FOR ROAD RAGE.

I SIMPLY LET THE PEOPLE PASS ME BY IF THEY ARE IN SUCH URGENCY TO REACH THEIR PLACE MAY THEY BE BLESSED AND ARRIVE SAFELY WITH OUT HARMING INNOCENT PEOPLE WHO DON'T HAVE THE RUSH TO GET THERE. OR I SMILE AT THEM THIS SOMETIMES GET THEM UPSET OR GETS THEM TO SMILE TO AND THEN THEY REALIZE THAT RUSHING THROUGH TRAFFIC WONT ALWAYS GET THEM THEIR SOONER

you shouldnt be doing anything other than concentrate on the road and whats ahead of you on your journey. this is how most accidents occur from people putting on make up, using cell phones, more worried about the radio station etc.. if you get that stressed out from driving, join a car pool or some other means of transportation.

There are some exercises which include inhaling and exhaling deeply for about one minute.

Another exercise is rotating your head slowly for about a minute or two minutes

There is also another exercise that is good for the spinal cord which is first straightening the spinal cord while inhaling then after that exhaling while relaxing your spinal cord.(2 min)

Another exercise is rotating your shoulders first backwards for about a minute while remembering to enhale and exhale deeply. Then rotating your shoulders forward while enhaling and exhaling

Though its not advisable to do any work while driving..yogas breathing exercise -'Pranayama'could be reccommended. Pranayama would't take you off from the seat.

Take deap breath... inhale..then exhale deeply...in the ratio 1:2..THE FRESH AIR ENTERS YOUR LUNGS...RALAXES YOU BODY MUSCLES...PUSHES FRESH BLOOD TO YOUR BRAIN... the stress is gone.

Dont take the hands off from the steering wheel... also your eyes should be fully focused on the road...

Nice question. Yes, breath but with positive thoughts. Breathing exercise with stressed mind is useless. Try to keep your thinking focused to pleasant thoughts in your life. It would increase your aura & when you reach you destination you will be more relaxed & in harmonious mood.

isnt it wise to do driving while driving and exercise while exercise. after all its not such a hectic world to find time for yourself. buddy its an 8, 10 or 12 hour job, but your life has to be a minimum of 60 years so please forget doing exercises while driving

Rather, listen to classical music. That's why they play it on customer service phone lines and in elevators. Even if you don't love classical, it soothes.

Playing ACDC or Korn may be the thing at home, but in reality, slow, calm, classical music probably helps drivers avoid accidents or road rage.

my personal favorite is the ujjayi breath. also known as the ocean breath or the hissing breath. you act as if your fogging up a mirror, but your constantly doing it when you breath in and out slowly. studies have shown that 2 hours of the ujjayi breath is almost equivalent to 30 min of pure REM sleep. kinda cool i thought =)

not any yoga exercises you can do while driving. yoga breathing exercise inquires your attention to your breath, your body. it's a great disattraction! it's very dangerous! no yoga even you don't have to drive while you are on your way to and back from work. yoga exercises require a silent enviroment. any noise will result in bad effect.

Yoga has no place in a car while in traffic. Can you be any more distracted? Perhaps you can do a downward facing dog while in gridlock, and then follow that with a return to center when traffic starts moving.
2007-06-28 16:15:55 UTC
I am not easily stressed by traffic, I am scared of the idiots driving in it. I don't get mad, I become afraid after the mom in the Suburban yelling at her 4 kids, talking on her cell phone and digging for the bag of cheerios in the diaper bag comes piloting into my lane and almost flattens me due to the fact that i am blocked in by other cars that decide to speed up so you cant get in front of them when you try to change lanes and in that process are being honked at by the impatient business man who thinks he's so important that the meeting won't wait for him so he honks and flips you off and all in all your trying to dodge mama in the speeding suburban death trap!! I wouldn't say I do Yoga breathing, more like Lamas!!! Hee--Hee--Hooo...Hee--Hee--Hooo!!!

Breathe in through the nose, and exhale through the mouth. Inhale about 3/4 of your lung capacity. Inhaling fully can cause you to feel light-headed. Oxygen is absorbed through the nasal lining as well as the lungs. More oxygen, more life. Every little bit helps. Good luck to you.

"Om.....(Peaceful breath) You dirty Rat!"

"Om....(Another peacful breath) Cut in front of me one more time, and....."

OK OK I am just kidding -- I usually try to say something like "Wow -- what GREAT traffic!" That helps defuse anger "stuff"

And I (honest I do this) sometimes I visualize a cloud of Peace slowly descending on all around me. Hey, why get mad - this traffic stuff is gonna be history 2 hours from now.

THEN... once I get to the next exit-- I am OUTTA THERE!!

Since we are stuck in traffic, impatience and anger are common. So, consciously relaxing by doing deep breathing will be very effective in keeping us calm. We can listen to some relaxing music too while waiting for the car ahead to move those few inches.

deffinetly try and control your heart rate using chi (TCM- traditional chinesse medicine) you can do this with your eyes wide open or relaxed. BUT DONT close them. this should take about a minute to control your heart rate. once your heart rate is controlled, find any radio station or CD you enjoy most and play it in your car. when the music is playing focus on the road but have your mind set out on trying to find beats in the music. you can amuse your self in many ways by doing little dance moves in the car or singing. =]

You could Listen to nice relaxing music like smooth jazz and turn the volume nice and low but not so low that you have to stress to listen to it but no so loud that you hurt yourself trying to listen to it, and at the same time you could take nice Deep breaths to calm yourself of any tension that you may be experiencing. I love to drink a nice cup of Tazo Tea called "Calm" (the name speaks for it self) because I know coffee will make me jumpy and "off the walls" And dot for get the Deep Deep breaths, Don breath from your throat because that will dry it out but breath from your stomach

Start by breathing in for one second and out for one second. Repeat but increase to two seconds. Continue to increase the intervals by 1 second each inhalation and exhalation until you are inhaling in for ten seconds and exhaling for ten seconds. Stop anytime you feel faint or dizzy. Driving and passing out don't mix.

My martial arts school liked to stress a specific Buddhist concept. Do what you are doing, while you are doing it. While I'm driving I'm mindful that I'm driving. The issue of having to distract yourself from an activity that is unpleasant is contradictory to what meditation is supposed to be about.

All you have to remember is INHALE EXHALE

That can calm you down for a emergency or if you had a car crash. I know it might be so scarey if you were on a car crash or something like that. All you have to do is INHALE EXHALE.

That will calm you down.

or it can be something different, that can just make you relax!

I try not to "relax" when driving. You need to be alert and aware the whole time. Even if you don't fall asleep at the wheel, being relaxed will slow your reaction time, cloud your judgment, and increase the likelihood of an accident.

Its called PRAANAYAMA.... In sanskrit - praanam means breath...

You use your thumb and fore finger (say of your right hand) , make them perpendicular to each other, then bring the hand over your nose and press the thumb against the right nostril while inhaling deeply through your left nostril and tucking in your stomach... then leave the pressure over the right nostril and exhale fully through it, while now holding your left nostril closed with the fore finger... repeat....

Two simple ones to try. Try breathing to the count of 6. Count to six slowly while you inhale and the to six slowly while you exhale. Also, try thinking "breath in" and "breath out" as you breath. This will slow your breathing and relax you. Try pulling in your stomach as you exhale and push it out as you inhale. This will provide a little ab work as you drive and breath.

when i'm driving in a busy street, i take an interest in drivers of cars and those sitting next to them. i keep guessing about them , ie, if they arent interested in each other, they are married or family members ; if the girl is focused on the driver , she is planning to catch him in matrimony, etc. when i'm driving in the highway, i listen to my favorite songs or music. i imagine i have wings and i'm about to fly. but all the time i'm careful , look in the mirrors , and anticipate actions of other drivers. mainly, i keep to the allowed speed so as not to get fined.

I do what's called circular breathing my yoga instructor taught me. using the thumb and pinky fingers (in the "hang loose" style-middle three fingers bent down) and breath in through one nostril while plugging the other. then exhale through the one you orginally had plugged while plugging the one you took the breath in through. I do this 5 times then switch nostrils. helps me relax!

Yoga is not a activity to do while you driving. When you do yoga it takes u in to deep of itself which can deviate your concentration from driving. Also yoga should not be practiced as

synchronous activity. It should be done in very peaceful environment.

You can listen songs or from my point of view sing yourself and enjoy your song...

Rush hour traffic does not have to be stressful.

Understand that rush hour is approaching and give yourself time to arrive there.

Have good relaxing music to listen to.

If rush hour is at a standstill, take this time to call your friends...on speakerphone.

Relax...think about good things...the day is stressful to begin with so don't try to rush what can't be rushed.

Personally, I would prefer that drivers concentrate on driving.

I keep my balance by constantly scanning, watching and predicting what the drivers around me are doing.

It's neccessary for me to stay alive.

Chekung allows to slow your breathe and heart, I've had learned it and it's fun to do when your stressed out and depressed.
2007-06-28 07:45:51 UTC
Acctually I do know of one. It is called "Breath of Fire", and it's very simple. All you do is pant(like a dog would), quickly inhale and exhale. While you do that peacefull music, or soothing sounds are helpful. Imagine somthing that makes you happy, or peaceful. That's it!

Hope this helps!

Try the one breathing in and out. It's very healthy.
2007-06-28 03:41:43 UTC
The normal Pranayama would do. Take a deep breath in such that your diaphragm takes the air in and contracts and take a breath out such that your diaphragm lets the air out. From outside it would look like your stomach part expanding when u breathe in and contracting when u breathe out. Hope it helped. sorry if it didnt

for heaven's sake, i advise not to do any yoga/exercise while either driving or even travelling by vehicle. even while travelling by train, it is not advisable for different reason. i am not talking on security point of view. that may be as a last reason. main reason why is it not to be done while driving - deep breathing is the essence of both yoga and exercise. while travelling, you are breathing not fresh air even while you are travelling in A.C.vehicle. it is polluted air. this may cause more damage for your purpose than giving any benefit. while travelling in train, you are breathing the air what others have exhaled.

i do it all the time. another great yoga move is smelling your fart. quite simple actually. u c, it is scientifically proven, that once gas is released from the belly, it makes a pleasurefull noise, yet at the same time, a pungent smell.

I try to keep my stress low by expressing any and all emotions I have toward my fellow motorist. If someone cuts me off, instead of keeping the emotions I feel bottled up and causing stress, I release my anger in a fit of cuss words, gestures, and the occasional honking of the horn. By the time I get to my destination, I am quite relieved that I made it there alive and this makes me feel thankful. Thus I am happy to be wherever I am.

While I've found that some deep breathing exercises can be helpful in taking a little of the edge off of driving in traffic, I find that distracting myself with a good audiobook is the best means for getting through the bumper to bumper gridlock of the LA freeways.

Sometimes if I have a particularly good book, I find myself almost wishing the drive could go on so I can get to the next part! Crazy, I know!

I've also discovered that my local library carries a very extensive audiobook collection; everything from the classics to the newly released so it's not only free it's convenient too! Typically I'll try to have at least 2-3 books checked out at a time so that I'm never stuck with nothing to listen to.

When I need a break from the books, I've found that mellow music works well in the morning. For those of you living in the Los Angeles area, 88.1 is a great Jazz station that has a terrific morning show that's super mellow and has an ultra smooth DJ. It's not that elevator music crap, it's the real deal.

On the drive home, the music has to be more interesting, loud and jolting, such as certain rock and indie genres, to keep my edge. I find that even these styles of music can even have a meditative quality to them as well.

As a final defense against the monotonous, tideous and unpredictable flow of cars of which I am at the mercy of, there is my own imagination, which I engage and transport myself away from it all.
2007-06-29 06:44:12 UTC

I don't do Yoga but I will listen to a classical station. The music seems to put me in a calming state of mind, especially during rush hour. Also a book on tape helps to keep the focus on the story and not the stupid stuff people are doing on the freeway. Whatever you do, stay alert and stay safe! Also when you do so much caffeine, that will place you in an agitate state of mind, so lay off of the coffee/lattes and try something decaffeinated to drink on the trip. It also helps to obtain a real good night's sleep. Driving on a severe lack of sleep makes your real cranky.

Breathing exercise while driving I would suggest you breath long fill the air in your stomach than breath out easily it will refine your blood and reduce stomach fat. This pranayan called Kapalbhati. It is very beneficial for those people who feel laziness and tired at work place.

So, do this continuously and you will find the difference.

Simply breathing in and out. Though don't close your eyes, still be aware of what is going around you but don't let it affect you. Just breathe, instead of stressing over the two seconds you missed when that car cut you off.

My drive home is about 45 minutes to 1 hour. I listen to one particular radio show that is syndicated, so I get more than just a local feel. I am aware of what is going on around the nation. I also listen to the shows informative guests and topics that are discussed and of course the music in between is always a moving beat!

When not listen to that I tuned in to talk radio, I need to be informative is my motto.

Regardless of your training, Breathing deeply, both inhaling and exhaling, as long as you are mindful of your actions, will always be the most effective parctice.

While I suggest you should pay attention to the road, there are certain "pranaram" you can do while sitting in bumper-bumper traffic. One exercise, "kapal bahti" is forceful exhalation through the nose. This is a breathing yoga and is part of a very helpful series of breathing exercises. You do kapal bahti why forceufllly exhaling from your nose for 30 seconds every second or so. Then inhale and repeat.

yoga not only helps you with stress but also help you to be calm in such situations.......so i think instead of searching for a short cut methods if you go for yoga regularily.......such as PRANAYAM.......i don't think there will be any need to go for any exercise during driving.....'coz it will make your mind immune to such stressful situations....and you will be calm even in traffic jams.....believe me.....

I am not very familiar with yoga and deep breathing for exercise, but I would advice people not to breathe deep while driving since deep breathing too much can cause hyperventilation and it may be dangerous especially if you are driving since hyperventilation affects your thinking speed which is not good. I think that music is also not good for driving since it may also affect your concentration.

i hope this helped.
