Are you on hormone replacement therapy...specifically, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy? This is not to be confused with synthetic hormones like Premarin/Prempro. These are hormones exactly like yours and custom made to your body's needs. Hormone therapy definitely supports your metabolism and has other profound benefits as well.

Beyond that, you might want to consider the over-the-counter supplement DHEA and/or stacked amino acids. One good amino product is Rejuvemax by BioCentrics. Both products are popular anti-aging supplements that stimulate our body's natural Human Growth Hormone (HGH) production. The decline of HGH as we age has been strongly linked to why many people have increasing weight problems as they age.

What is Metabolism?

When we eat, food is converted into energy. The term "metabolism" refers to the way -- not the speed – that your body processes and uses the food you eat. Rather than "faster" or "slower" metabolism, it's most accurate to describe metabolism as efficient or functional versus inefficient or dysfunctional.

The Hypothyroidism / Metabolism Connection

If you have undiagnosed hypothyroidism, or your condition is not adequately treated by your doctor, almost anything you do to raise your metabolism on the output side may fail. So the first, essential step is to get a thyroid test. And if you have been tested and are being treated, you need to make sure your treatment is optimized -- including the proper drug and dosage, as well as supplements to support thyroid function.

Increase Your Basal Metabolism

Metabolism is somewhat a function of genetics, but you can increase basal metabolism by building muscle. Muscle cells are up to eight times more metabolically active than fat cells, and muscle burns more calories than fat. Adding weight-bearing or resistance exercise – such as weightlifting or exercise bands -- is one of the only ways to increase basal metabolism.

An efficient metabolism also requires the smooth running of many complex body processes that rely on sufficient antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin C and the B vitamins. Supplements to correct any deficiencies are therefore important.

Finally, dehydration can contribute to an inefficient metabolism, by affecting body temperature. When you are dehydrated, your body temperature drops slightly, and causes your body to store fat as a way to help raise or maintain the temperature. Making sure you drink enough liquids, preferably at least 64 ounces of water per day, to avoid this metabolic pitfall.

Increase Physical Activity

Aerobic exercise that increases the heart rate can raise metabolism while you're exercising. Some experts believe that aerobic exercise also boosts resting metabolism for several hours, as muscles burn calories to recover and repair themselves.

Increase the Thermic Effect of Food

Resting metabolic rate typically increases as much as two to three times more after eating proteins versus carbohydrates and fats. Complex, high-fiber carbohydrates -- like high-fiber vegetables and cereals, however -- burn more calories than simple carbohydrates. You can increase the thermic effect on metabolism by focusing on quality protein, high-fiber fruits and vegetables, with an occasional high-fiber grain.

From Jerry Kennard, Here's How:

1. Exercise: Your metabolic rate will increase during exercise and it continues even after you stop. The more frequently you exercise the greater the overall effect.

2. Move About: People who fidget, move about and change position a lot, can burn hundreds more calories a day more than those who simply slump in a chair.

3. Eat Early: Metabolic rate is highest in the morning and decreases over the day. Starting the day with a good breakfast can boost resting metabolic rate by as much as 10%. People who skip breakfast and eat more food later in the day will tend to have lower metabolisms.

4. Increase Muscle: We all expend energy even when we are at rest. Muscle tissue uses up around 20% of your daily intake of calories. An increase in muscle tissue can increase the resting metabolic rate as much as 10%. You will need proper guidance so it is best to seek advice from a qualified fitness or weights instructor.

5. Drink Water: The body uses energy as cold water is drunk. In fact one litre of iced water takes one calorie to raise its temperature by 1 degree. In theory, drinking a litre of iced water could therefore burn around 36 calories; in practice it would not be wise to drink excessive amounts of water simply in order to burn calories.

Hi there!

Your best bet is to keep your calories to 1500 per day ( to avoid starvation mode, where metabolism slows down, and to stay there so you don't create calorie surpluses, which lead to fat gain).

Try to break up the 1500 into five meals of about 300, this keeps your metabolism revving and avoids the food coma from overeating, where blood rushes to your stomach for digestion. You want the blood in your working muscles.

Next stay active and be patient. Your goal should be an average of two pounds per week, albeit it could be faster.

I also suggest that you find someone knowledgeable to encourage and motivate you to help you reach your goal. This really helps.

I believe this answers your question, but if not, you may email me.

Good luck on your diet and fitness goals!

This may be more of the same, but I will try anyways.

Muscle has a higher metabolism than fat. The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism. So .... start an exercise program. You may go to your local gym or you can save some money by doing your own exercise routine at home. Start with some cardio, by walking at least three times a week and then increase to four times a week and so on. Start some weight lifting for areas of your body where you think you need to strengthen. If you think you should loose some fat in your belly, you should do some sit-ups.

Your body will need energy for this and it will get it from the things you eat or from the body fat it stored earlier in life. If you eat little amounts of carbs and fat, your body will start burning fat, but this doesn't mean that you should starve yourself. You should have 5 meals a day and eat enough protein.

As soon as you replace fat with muscle your metabolism will be higher.

This is a way of life, not a diet or a temporary thing. As soon as you stop doing exercise your body will start storing fat again and that will slow down your metabolism.

While exercise and eating 5-6 times a day will help in not only boosting you metabolism and mitigating insulin secretion, drinking water has been proven to be helpful as well.

Despite the fact that most diets call for drinking at least eight, 8-ounce glasses of water a day, few studies have been done to determine if the practice actually speeds weight loss. In an effort to answer this question, Michael Boschmann, MD, and colleagues from Berlin's Franz-Volhard Clinical Research Center tracked energy expenditures among seven men and seven women who were healthy and not overweight.

After drinking approximately 17 ounces of water, the subjects' metabolic rates -- or the rate at which calories are burned -- increased by 30% for both men and women. The increases occurred within 10 minutes of water consumption and reached a maximum after about 30 to 40 minutes.

The study also showed that the increase in metabolic rate differed in men and women. In men, burning more fat fueled the increase in metabolism, whereas in women, an increased breakdown of carbohydrates caused the increase in metabolism seen.

The researchers estimate that over the course of a year, a person who increases his water consumption by 1.5 liters a day would burn an extra 17,400 calories, for a weight loss of approximately five pounds. They note that up to 40% of the increase in calorie burning is caused by the body's attempt to heat the ingested water. The findings are reported in the December issue of The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

You must maintain a healthy lower calorie diet.Eat less carbohydrates and more whole foods and protein.Protein is helpful because it's the highest thermic food.

Going for a walk in the evening can be helpful but weight training is one of the best exercises you can do to lose weight.

One of the ways this works is by stimulating new muscle growth thus metabolizing more calories even at rest(about 50 cal per pound of muscle).

The fact of the matter is you MUST just stick with it.Following some of the guidelines here will help.

It is also unnecessary to drink 8 8 ounce glasses of water per day.

Calculate you BMR and consume less calories than you burn.

Consider some low carb protein bars.Stay away from granola and those type snacks.

This will dispel that stupid cabbage nonsense among other things. This is excerpted from a Yahoo! Health e mail.

The following diet myths come up over and over again at my nutrition center. My next two blog entries will help set the record straight. Hope you find this helpful!

If you eat late at night, the food turns straight into fat.

Not true.If your overall calories are appropriate for weight loss, you certainly can eat something after dinner. Late night calories will ultimately get used the next day (and even while you sleep).

However, for the sake of energy, it is always better to eat your calories during the day when your body needs the fuel. Plus, eating consistently throughout the day will stabilize blood sugar levels -- so you’ll feel energized and experience fewer cravings. If you are going to snack after dinner, I suggest choosing something 250 calories or less.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are more nutritious than frozen.

Not necessarily. Frozen can be a great produce option (just avoid varieties with added salt, sugar, and sauce). Frozen foods are picked in the peak of ripeness, then frozen. You can eat them as you need them -- and most of the nutrients are locked in. On the other hand, fresh fruit and vegetables are typically harvested before they ripen, and can have nutrient variability. Also, the longer fresh produce sits around in your fridge, the less nutrients it will contain.

Bottom line: Buy both fresh and frozen and eat as much as you can.

Cravings are your body's way of telling you it needs something.

This has never been proven. You normally crave what you like to eat (or smell or see someone else eating). Also, hormonal changes are sometimes responsible for food cravings. Ice cream and pickles anyone?

Any type of water is always better than soda.

No. There are a few caloric waters with sexy marketing ploys. In fact, some brands have quite a bit of sugar. Always check labels.

Certain foods, like grapefruit, celery, or cabbage soup can burn fat and make you lose weight.

These are anecdotal stories that have no scientific back up. It’s true these foods are low in calories, but they do NOT actually burn fat

The combination of caffeine and aspirin before a work out will help to mobilize fat into your blood stream for use as fuel. Most herbal products with the exeption of ephedra do nothing for your metabolism.Ephedra has been banned by the FDA once again.

Things like guarana and gotu kola only speed metabolism because of the caffeine they contain.Dehydroepiandrosterone(DHEA) may help people above the age of 35 to regulate their endocrine system

the First thing is to understand want metabolism is and that is the calories burned while resting, the body burns calories at a rated of 14 cal. per day per pound of muscle and about 3 per pound of fat. so you need to build muscle, the best way is to get lots of protein, about one once per pound of lean muscle, plant protein is best because it is not hard on the kidneys, and soy protein really helps to balance out the hormones that are associated with menopause, that's the best thing I have an awesome program if you are interested, email me and green tea will also help to give you a boost, the tea i use burns 200 calories for each teaspoon of powder u use it is an instant tea. hope this helps.
