My mum is very overweight and extremely inflexible-she wants to lose weight and not feel stiff any more but doesn't want to prance around the house doing an exercise video, everybody has been suggesting Pilates or Yoga...would this be suitable?

pilates and yoga wouldn't really help her lose weight, they are more for stretching and toning. but if she did some walking or some other exercise that increases heart rate and modified her food intake she would lose weight. but pilates and yoga are great for aches and pains, increasing flexibility, feeling better in general. i guess if she didn't feel so stiff and sore, she may be more inclined to go for a walk or something. good luck

The choice between Yoga and Pilates depends on what you are looking for. If you want an exercise that improves flexibility while toning your muscles - especially those abs - then Pilates is probably your better choice. If you want to concentrate a bit more on flexibility and a little less on toning (perhaps you're getting your strength training elsewhere), and you are also searching for something that helps reduce stress and gives you an opportunity for some quiet time, then you should try Yoga. If you have strong religious convictions, you may also be better off with Pilates, although many Yoga classes these days offer little or no philosophy and are acceptable for all religious persuasions. Either choice is good - you're enhancing your body's health in a way no other form of exercise can accomplish.

Personally I enjoy pilates more than yoga. Yoga is a mind/body thing (more like, mediation with stretching). Pilates focuses on your core and you don't even feel like you are doing anything when you do it. It is so relaxing!
