I'm a 16-year-old girl; 5'5.5" and 162 lbs. Luckily it doesn't show as much as it should, but I am obviously a bit overweight. I really want to lose weight, and my dad just made a bet with me that if I can lose 20 lbs. by April 1, he'll give me $100. Well, my goal weight is actually about 125 lbs.

I'm already using the iPod Touch app Lose It. But please recommend any good diet foods, any good exercises (that don't require equipment). So far I've been walking for about 3 or 4 miles a day, but I still haven't lost anything. Any advice would be much appreciated. Please help!

When you are losing weight, you should exercise and diet together.

If you exercise without dieting, you will get bigger appetite, which

will lead to increase of weight, or muscle grow

underneath the fat layer, and make you bulkier. If you diet without

exercising, you will become flabby and will have excess skin. For

diet, go wheat free. No pasta, pizza, bread and so on. And no food

after 7 p.m. People achieve marvellous results with it. Depending on

your initial weight, you can drop upwards from 20 pounds a month. If

you don't eat wheat then you don't eat all those sticky, fatty goey

cakes, you don't eat junk food, and you don't eat biscuits. But your

diet is still balanced. It costs nothing, and you do not have to

calculate points or to buy special meals or plans. For exercising,

start with walking, and then switch to running/jogging. Running is the

most efficient and calorie-burn exercise ever. If you are overweight a

lot, walk first or you may have health complications (heart attack,

disjointed bones and so on). Weight lifting is a good means to target

your problem areas for men and women. It's not necessarily to become a

bodybuilder or even join a gym - a couple of dumbbells will help you

to target your problem areas (stomach, butt, legs, arms, chest).

Ok, I'm a bit old fashioned, so I'll probably be given a bad ratting and about 20 thumb down marks. But look, here is how I see it. Not everyone is the same, and not everyone is going to lose weight the same, but I'll bet you that if you were to just simply consider what you are eating, and work out, you would notice a difference. I don't mean a diet, I don't believe in "diets", just watch how much soda you drink, don't over eat, too much of any 1 thing is not good, and make sure you eat 3 meals a day, and I stress again... do not over-eat.

Now, for working out, when i was in the marine Corps, we did alot of workouts that didn't require ANY equipment.

Start off easy.

Quit the walking, start running or jogging

In the morning, run 1 mile

Then do 40 jumping jacks

Then do 20 sit-ups or crunches

Then do 20 Flutter kicks

Then do 10 push ups

DO this every morning for 1 month, but increase the running to 2 miles at 2 weeks and 3 miles at 4 weeks, I'll bet you and everyone else notices a difference

I will tell you a fab diet that i used. For 3 days (or 2 if 3's too much) eat a fist-sized bit of protein every three hours. (meat, eggs, fish, cheese etc.) This raises your metabalism and helps your body burn up fat. Then after the 3 days, eat salad with protein every meal. You can have one cheat day every week to confuse your body. in the morning you can have a carbohydrate like toast or cerial or a muffin or something) Continue until you reach your desired weight. Exercises with this diet help and I went for a run every night, evening is probably the best time to do ecercises as your metabalism slows down then. Good Luck, and DONT GIVE UP!

Add running to your walk. Walk for a few minutes, then run until you can't anymore then walk, then run again, etc. You will burn more calories than walking alone.

Cut out sugar and refined carbohydrates, especially after dinner. Refined carbohydrates are "bad" carbs - white bread, pasta, white rice, pizza crust, breading, etc. Fill up on fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, 100% whole wheat bread, and lean meats such as eggs, tuna, chicken and fish without breading.

Lastly, expect resistance to your efforts, and ignore it. Your mother and possibly even your father will not like it when you stop eating their rice and pasta meals and hamburger dishes. Your friends will think you are stupid for not wanting to eat at McDonalds or drink beer at their parties. And people will look at you like you're crazy for wanting to go for runs all the time. Don't give in to their discouragement. Very few Americans work out and eat right like you. Set a great example for them, and when you are slender and toned and feeling great and looking great in the latest styles they will be secretly jealous of you. You go girl - make health a lifelong habit! I'm rooting for you! :)

Bekka's advice was not bad, although I would phrase it differently.

You are going to need to watch what you eat. You do not need to count calories, but you will need to worry about portion control, generally what you eat, and what types of food. Learn what a serving of protein looks like, a serving of carbohydrate, dairy, etc.

Different diets work best for different people.

Generally, you should keep protein at a reasonable level, and cut back on carbs (perhaps very hard, depending on how you process them), plus use lower fat items. Eat tons of fibrous (not starchy) vegetables. Do not eat garbage on a day to day basis.

I've been using Lyle macdonald's rapid fat loss handbook (available on his website electronically), i like it a lot. his site is www.bodyrecomposition.com. The basic diet would be for someone at your weight a reasonable amount of lean meat, some dairy, lots of vegetables, and that's it ... but you get two cheat meals a week where you eat a reasonable portion of whatever you'd like. You could easily drop 20 lbs in that time frame using his diet.

As for exercise, your duration sounds not bad, you want to gradually bring up the intensity. Look up 'couch to 5k' for suggestions on how to transition from walking to light jogging. I'd guess you're walking something like 75 minutes a day, jogging 75 minutes a day would burn easily 500 calories more than walking for that long.

Good diet foods are lean chicken, ham, fish, a little bit of plain yogurt, and lots of vegetables. Things like salsa or herbs are useful for adding flavor. A chicken breast on its own is pretty bland, a chicken breast on a bed of lettuce with some sliced vegetables garnished with salsa and a tablespoon or two of plain yogurt is pretty good actually! Grill a small piece of lean meat with grilled tomatoes, peppers and onions tossed in balsamic vinegar and oregano. Fish with some steamed vegetables and a shot of lemon juice.

Now I'm hungry. At least for good foods ;)

Actually, you don't have to diet as such to lose weight, I read this at the site in the box below, they have loads of tips and tricks, I melted away 5 pounds by following their techniques.
