Question:
I am currently eating 1000 calories a day and exercising 3x a day. Is this healthy? It seems to be working.?

I am overweight so I am not anorexic or anything like that. I want to know if this is a good thing because it seems to be working for me.

While it probably helps your self esteem, it is probably not healthy. Your calorie intake is probably OK, but how much are you burning? You don't want to lose it TOO fast. I'm overweight too, so I've done some research. One website said that you should hope to lose one pound per week. (I'm trying for more.) All the sites I've visited agree that to lose one pound of fat requires you to burn 3500 more calories than you take in. A good site to determine how many you are burning is caloriesperhour.com Good luck!

If it's working, then it's fine. Your ocverweight you said, so your body is not deprived. But, I wouldn't go lower calorie wise, for energy for one and because your body will begin storing the fat and eating the muscle first if you starve yourself. 5 small portioned, healthy low-cal meals will help you keep full and give you energy bursts. I don't know how you exercise 3x a day, I'd never have time to squeeze that many workouts into a day! But, I go 3-4x a week to the gym and do cardio for about 30-40 minutes, and then weight training another hour. If you hit a plateau where it seems to have stopped working, switch up your workout routines a little bit.

If your working out 3x a day and it is rather detailed exercising, you need to replenish your body's fuel but not over do it. You have to burn more calories than what your taking in but too less calories may not be good.

Try 1200 calories and make the most of what you eat to make up those calories. Such as more fiber, fruits, veggies, lean meats, chicken, turkey breast, etc.

You should not go below 1200 calories a day... because after that your body goes into starvation mode and begins to store fat and eat muscle... so if you're losing weight some of it might be your muscle mass. ESPECIALLY if you're exercising 3x a day. I would say if you want to continue exercising 3x a day to up your calorie intake a couple of hundred calories.. .that will keep you strong and keep your energy levels boosted.

if you are getting proper nutrition from the 1000 calories, then sounds like a great plan. i am NOT a dr so, this is just the opinion of an average person. but... to me, it seems like common sense that if you are eating a balanced diet, and you are overweight, then the low amount of calories has to be healthier then the weight.

It depends on what you are eating. According to the 6 week body make-over, it doesn't matter the calories, it matters on what you eat for your body type (motabolism rate). The foods you eat can slow or speed your motabolism rate. The exercising is good, but the clue to that is to tighten up your body while doing the workouts. Make sure you have your veggies and fruits along with your white meats. And remember, no greasy foods >which is where I make my mistakes...lol...

But good job and keep up the good work!

ChimChim, be careful. Your body is a "smart machine" and if it starts getting the message that you are starving it, it will slow down your metabolism to compensate for the low calories.

You might want to consider raising your intake to about 1200 calories, just to be on the safe side. :)

P.S. Make sure your calories are nutrient dense (lots of fresh veggies/fruits, beans, whole grain, etc. - not a frozen coffee drink from Starbucks!!)

as long as you are not feeling more sleepy than usual, and you are eating three times a day and eating health foods, you should be fine. If you start to feel sleepy constantly, strange mood swings, or you cant concentrate, that is bad. Meaning you need to eat more. I understand you trying to lose weight and eating less and exercising more is what you should be doing. Good luck = ], been there done that

I did more or less the same thing and lost a ton of weight. As long as you make sure you're eating 1000calories of the right things(protein for your muscles, veggies for vitamins, plenty of water, etc) It isn't unhealthy, just don't do it for months on end. Oh and don't take diet pills either, do it the real way.

If you are working out, you want to have a higher caloric intake. Just make sure are not eating "empty calories".

Eat smart + exercise = lose/maintain weight.

2000 calories should be ur intake for food..eating healthy plus other foods in moderate when u reach your goal weight will be perfect for you. but..if u feel it is working, then diets vary for everyone. if u feel fine then carry on but if u start to feel weak then eat a snack like fruit, nuts, or a health bar. if u are hungry then eat...dont starve yourself!

Sounds good, especially if you're exercising 10 to 15 minutes at a time.

Good luck!

As long as you do not overexercise. Also, make sure your calories count (IE not empty sugar calories). You will not gain on this regiment and will continue to lose weight over time. Be careful

It will only work temporarily. You may have a sugar problem, it may be a lot of people do. It seems the American diet is not so good.

probably not enough calories, and i don't know what you mean by exercising 3x a day - for how long? what are you doing? odds are it's too much.
2008-09-08 10:58:24 UTC
yeah that is a healthy lifestyle as long as your are taking in sufficient fluids and enough energy to cope with 3x exercising per day.

keep going:)
